Starport Systems Demonstrates Gen2 UHF RFID Reader Reference Designs for PDAs and Smartphones

All CMOS System-on-Chip Design Drives Power, Space and Cost Savings in Handheld UHF RFID Reader Applications

DALLAS, March 26 -- RFID World 2007 -- Starport Systems, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company developing RF and mixed-signal system- on-chip (SOC) solutions, will be demonstrating an SD (Secure Digital) and mini-SD-based EPC Gen2 / ISO18000-6C UHF RFID Plug-n-Play reader reference design during the RFID World 2007 Conference here this week. The reference design is for use in handheld platforms. Starport is located in booth #1716.

By utilizing industry standard SDIO interface and Starport's SP7001 silicon and software, Plug-n-Play reference designs are intended to accelerate customer deployment of UHF Gen2 Readers for the existing handheld platforms such as PDAs, smartphones and handheld PCs, transforming them into low cost networked Gen2 UHF RFID readers and writers.

By implementing intelligent power management algorithms in the reference design, coupled with space and cost savings offered by SP7001, Starport has removed all the major barriers for the implementation of UHF RFID reader technology on mobile platforms.

Unlike the current multi-chip, non-CMOS UHF reader solutions, the SDIO reference design is based on all CMOS single-chip SP7001 silicon. With an on-chip processor and integrated memory inside the SP7001 silicon, the external components, size and power of the reader solution are minimized. Moreover, CMOS technology allows the SP7001 to follow Moore's Law, benefiting the end users with continuous reduction in price and increased level of integration.

"Low-cost Plug-n-Play UHF readers based on our SP7001 silicon will create a new class of consumer-driven applications which was not possible before," said Dr. Armond Hairapetian, President and Chief Executive Officer of Starport Systems. "These consumer-driven applications will drastically improve the return on RFID investments for the retailers and manufacturers."

By using proprietary, patent-pending circuit and system design techniques in CMOS technology, Starport Systems was able to integrate a complete Gen2 UHF Reader (Radio + MAC) into the SP7001, resulting in significant system and power savings. The ability to develop high performance system solutions in CMOS allows Starport Systems to deliver the most integrated and lowest power solutions to the industry.
