SSI Shredding Systems Builds Transfer Station Compactors to Help Improve East Russia's Waste Disposal Standards
In an effort to increase air and water quality, the city of Khabarovsk, Russia looked to its U.S. sister-city of Portland, OR as inspiration for better waste collection and disposal methods. As a part of the solution, SSI Shredding Systems of Wilsonville, OR was contracted to build pre-load compactors for the city of Khaborvsk's waste transfer system.
Wilsonville, OR - After years of exposure to harmful pollutants and disease rendering elements from open garbage dumps, the city of Khabarovsk, Russia has moved ahead on a solution to help improve their air and water quality. Using its United States sister city, Portland, Oregon as a model, Khabarovsk has developed a solid waste management solution for the city's waste disposal. One of the main goals of this solution was to find an effective way to reduce the volume of solid waste prior to its final disposal, while at the same time, creating a more cost-effective, safer and cleaner disposal process. In March 2010, the city of Khabarovsk gave SSI Shredding Systems of Wilsonville, Oregon the "green light" to help make this goal a reality.
The compactor system created by SSI consists of two pre-load 2500 SPH EX, two-bale compactors, each with its own automated infeed conveyor. Each compactor is designed to form two, high density, square ended bales which are contained and transported to a landfill for final disposal. Compressing the waste into bales maximizes the amount of each payload and thereby significantly reduces handling and transportation costs for the city. These two machines combined are able to process up to 1,200 tons of waste every day.
"This new system not only reduces the volume of waste by compaction but also significantly reduces the number of trips on the highway system. When compacted waste is transferred into containers for transport to the landfill, the waste is contained from spillage and leakage throughout the process." said Dave Miller, Project Engineer at SSI. This custom designed pre-load compactor system is the first of its kind in Russia and the first compactor sale/installation in the country for SSI Shredding Systems.
