Komatsu America Forestry Division Launches New S132 Harvesting Head High Capacity Final Felling Head

Chattanooga TN — Komatsu America Corp. introduces the new S132 Harvesting Head, the second model in its new S-series family of “squeeze-style” harvesting heads.  It is a high capacity head suited for a wide variety of final felling applications including those with crooked trees and tough branches.  Weighing 2,965 lbs (1,345 kg), the S132 has a recommended DBH working range of 6” (150 mm) to 17” (440 mm) diameter and a maximum cutting diameter of up to 28.3” (720 mm).  It is available installed on Komatsu 931.1 and 941.1 Harvesters, and as a loose head that can be installed on other carriers.

The S132 is built on a proven robust frame design that provides excellent durability, reliability and protection of key components.  The 360º rotator, a 128º tilt link angle and an effective swing damping/braking system ensures fast feeding performance and reduces head frame stress when harvesting and/or reaching on downhill slopes.   Standard protective covers on the tilt link and between the tilt link and the hood help protect the S132 from snow packing or debris accumulation.

The S132 is designed on the principle that the delimbing knives carry the trunk.  The head is equipped with four moveable delimbing knives, three of which are hydraulically controlled.  The fourth knife is an automatically pressure-controlled floating top knife with a sensor to manage Komatsu’s Flex Friction Control System™.  The sensor automatically controls knife pressure and lifting force to minimize friction between the trunk and the head.  This sensor provides signals to the other knives to ensure that the stem is properly fitted into the head using knife pressure control.  There is an additional fifth delimbing knife that is fixed and located in the bottom of the frame, just above the saw box.  This knife is used when the “pre-delimbing” of trees is needed, before the head is attached on the tree.

The new two-driven roller, two motor squeeze-style feed system is specifically designed to handle tough or crooked stems.  The powerful 2 x 857 cc feed roller motors generate 5,980 lbf (26.6 kN) of feed force and up to 13.8 ft/sec (4.2 m/sec) feed speed.  With its unique 2-driven feed roller design, the head allows the stem to rotate within the head itself facilitating the feed of forked, crooked and double stems.  The new self-cleaning V-Steel Softgrip™ feed rollers maximize grip while minimizing log damage, and the new cast steel feed roller arms provide high reliability and durability.

The S132 SuperCut™ cutting unit system has a 29.5” (750 mm) long saw bar with a 15 mm bar slot and a 19 cc saw motor, and can achieve a maximum cutting diameter up to 28.3” (720 mm).  Standard automatic cut control, chain tensioning and chain oiling deliver high productivity.  For a consistently high level of measurement accuracy, a hydraulically-controlled length measuring wheel in the upper part of the head and a 4-point diameter measuring system include three sensors in the roller arms and one in the lower (rear) knife.  Optional stump treatment and color marking systems are available to meet specific customer needs.

Komatsu’s new MaxiXplorer™ 3.1 Head Control System is standard and offers a state-of-the art, flexible, and user-friendly control and monitoring system.  When installed on a Komatsu harvester, it is a complete system for machine control, head control, crosscutting and administration.  Machine productivity is optimized by controlling everything from the head to the crane, cab leveling, transmission, and ladders.

All grease servicing points, bar oil and color marking tank fill points are accessible from one position when the head is parked on the ground to ease serviceability and maintenance.  The head computer and hydraulic valve can be readily accessed by tilting up the hood.  Hydraulic valves and hydraulic hoses are well-protected and nearly all utilize ORFS couplings.
