Only Company in U.S. to Use 100% Virgin Resin
Auburn, Illinois – Springfield Plastics, Inc. (SPI) is the only U.S. company to receive certification for use of 100% Virgin Resin in Drainage Pipe. Steve Baker, President of the company stated, "We feel it is very important for our customers to know that we want to make this commitment to them year after year. That's why we have continued to receive this certification and to remain a leader in providing top quality drainage products."
This is the 14th consecutive year Springfield Plastics has received certification that verifies the company only purchases virgin resin to be used in the manufacturing of its drainage pipe. Standard setting organizations, such as ASTM and USDA-NRCS, have required the use of virgin resin materials for many years. However, many drainage pipe companies continue to use recycled materials in their products to reduce their costs.Â
Recycled materials cost less than virgin materials. Regulators have always been concerned with the wide variability of the physical properties in recycled materials and how they affect the long-term performance of drainage pipe. The variability in the materials could lead to stress cracking, poor deflection and impact strengths and uneven wall distributions. If any of these things occur the farmer/landowner could be looking at system failure. Baker adds, "Quality is our 1st priority and we cannot risk exposing our customers to theses defects. Farmers expect the drainage pipe they install in their fields to serve them for many years and to be top quality. We feel that being the only company to extend our certification of virgin resin use to our customers is meeting that goal."
