Splunk Introduces the World's First IT Data Platform

Users, Partners and Developers Creating Integrated IT Search Applications from Operations to Security and Compliance

SAN FRANCISCO, March 3 / / -- Splunk, the IT Search company, today launched the Splunk Platform, and a Splunk for PCI Compliance application built on the platform. The Splunk Platform includes a common set of services and APIs making it easy for users, partners and developers to create and integrate applications that leverage vast amounts of IT data. Release of the platform coincides with the general availability release of Splunk 3.2, including Splunk for Windows.

The Splunk Platform is the industry's first integrated approach to keeping infrastructure available, secure and compliant. Splunk collects and manages logs, configurations, messages, traps and alerts, and statistics from every IT component making the data available to any application for fast problem solving, threat response, compliance reporting or insight into user activity and transactions. Splunk customers can create their own applications on the platform, easily distribute their applications and download applications created by anyone in the Splunk ecosystem.

"The sheer magnitude and dynamic nature of machine generated data is overwhelming, forcing IT functions to be managed as individual silos with their own independent processes, tools and domain knowledge," said Michael Baum, Splunk's CEO and co-founder. "While people initially start using Splunk for a specific application -- like troubleshooting problems, enhancing security monitoring, or compliance log management -- as they index more data it becomes valuable for a number of applications across operations, security and compliance silos."

"The notion of what defines a management application is changing," said Jasmine Noel, principal research analyst with Ptak Noel and Associates. "As more IT organizations focus on processes and tasks, they start thinking about how IT information can support and interact with management applications. Not unlike Salesforce.com, which started as a singular CRM application and evolved into a platform for applications centered on customer information, Splunk is evolving from an IT Search tool into a platform for applications that center around IT information."

The Splunk Platform has already been successful with OEMs and systems integrators unlocking new business opportunities, shortening development cycles and speeding time to market. Partners have both bundled and embedded Splunk with their own hardware, software and services.

"The integration with Splunk exceeded every expectation I had," said Michelle Dickman, CEO, TriGeo Network Security. "With Splunk, we released a new capability in less than 90 days that would have otherwise taken us at least 18 months. That's money in the bank." And network automation software leaders Netcordia had a similar experience. "With Splunk, we delivered functionality beyond our wildest expectations, and got to market twice as fast," said Jay Ennis, executive vice president, Product Development, Netcordia.

Splunk for PCI Compliance

The first Splunk-built application on the platform is Splunk for PCI Compliance. Available for download from SplunkBase (http://www.splunkbase.com/), the application provides 125 searches, reports and alerts to satisfy PCI requirements such as secure remote access, file integrity monitoring, secure log collection, daily log review, audit trail retention, and PCI control reporting. Splunk for PCI makes it simple and fast to comply, answer auditor questions, and control access to your sensitive data.

Splunk 3.2 - New IT Search Platform Capabilities

Splunk 3.2 introduces new features for all platforms. Transaction search and interactive field extraction empower end users with new and easier ways to generate their own applications, and extend the platform's capabilities with filesystem change monitoring, flexible roles, data signing and audit trails. A new REST API and SDKs for .Net and Python open the platform for developers. And Splunk 3.2 brings IT Search to Windows for the first time, on the same single code base that runs on Linux, Mac OSX, Solaris, FreeBSD and AIX.
