Splice Enclosure Solves Tactical Field Cable Repair Problem
Cranbury, NJ, The Norland Flexible Splice Enclosure (P/N 20960M) for fiber optic tactical field cable is a novel solution for protecting fiber optic splices and restoring full cable strength to the repaired section of a cable.
In the past, ease of assembly and the bulkiness of the enclosure when the cable is wound on a storage reel had been a continuing problem for the military. The new enclosure is 13.25" long and 0.75" in diameter and is made using a flexible interlocking stainless steel core surrounded by a braided stainless steel mesh with a waterproof polyolefin covering. The length provides room to work with the fibers and make splicing easy and the flexibility allows it to form itself to the curve of the reel to minimize bulk. It holds up to 4 mechanical splices or 12 fusion splices.
A further advantage is the patented Kevlar® gripping design inside the enclosure which gives a tensile strength of over 400 pounds for the repaired cable. No crimping or special tools are required for assembly. This protective housing provides complete protection to splices from shocks, vibration, and environmental conditions. The versatile neoprene cable glands on each end provide a watertight seal for the cable and allow a wide range of cable diameters to be used.
The protective housing is rated for over 600 pounds/linear inch of compression. The Norland Flexible Splice Enclosure has been assigned NSN 6080-01-511-0275 for Splice Enclosure, Fiber Optic by the US Marine Corp. The splice housing is available from stock with single unit prices starting at $750.00. Complete fiber optic repair kits are also available which include splices and splice enclosures as well as all the tools required to repair the fiber optic cable.
