Spectrometer suits petrochemical industry.

Press Release Summary:

ARL OPTIM'X utilizes power of Wavelength Dispersive XRF technique. It features closely coupled optics and complete interception of primary X-ray beam from tube. Manual or automatic sample loader handles solids, liquids, or loose powders. SmartGonio(TM) optically-driven goniometer provides mutually independent rotation of crystal and detector. ARL OPTIM'X can provide sulfur analysis and measure Pb content in gasoline according to ISO or ASTM standards.

Original Press Release:

ARL OPTIM'X: Solving Analytical Requirements in the Petrochemical Industry

Winsford, CHESHIRE, England (April 11, 2003) - Continuing the tradition of innovation in X-ray technology, Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE:TMO) presents the ARL OPTIM'X. This new instrument will bring the power of Wavelength Dispersive XRF technique for simplified analysis in the petrochemical labs. This compact system is built with several unique features for optimum analytical performance:

o Closely coupled optics and complete interception of the primary X-ray beam from the tube;
o SmartGonio(TM): Optically driven miniaturized goniometer with mutually independent theta - two-theta rotation of crystal and detector;
o Configuration with a series of Multichromators(TM) for simultaneous analysis or with the unique SmartGonio(TM) for sequential capability or both;
o At least 8 to 10 times better spectral resolution than Energy Dispersive XRF instruments;
o Much better performance for light elements (Na to Cl) compared to EDXRF instruments;
o High reliability and precision compared to low-power WDXRF systems currently in the market;
o Manual or automatic sample loader for solids, liquids or loose powders;
o No water cooling required and depending on the configuration can be free of external gas supply;
o Excellent price/performance ratio for dedicated applications.

The ARL OPTIM'X is ideally suited for areas such as refineries or central labs in the petrochemical industries. It offers a cost effective analytical solution for dedicated applications, like:

o Sulphur analysis in petrochemical products (oils, gasoline, fuels, diesel, naphtha) according to ISO or ASTM standard methods; The performance of the ARL OPTIM'X is such that it already complies with the most stringent regulations for S content (less than 10 ppm) that will be effective in 2010!
o Pb content in gasoline according to ISO or ASTM standards
o Other traces and additives (Ca, Zn, Ba, Cl, P, etc.) in petrochemical products

The ARL OPTIM'X joins the already well-established family of XRF instruments from Thermo, the ARL ADVANT'X range and the ARL 9800 series.
