SPECTRO to Launch New Micro-Beam Metal Analyzer for Jewelry, Precious Alloy Manufacturers

Benchtop system provides fast, accurate, non-destructive analysis of alloy composition

Fitchburg, MA - February 5, 2003 -- SPECTRO Analytical Instruments, a leading global supplier of spectrometers, has introduced a new "pinhole" alloy analyzer designed specifically to meet the needs of manufacturing and quality assurance managers in the jewelry and precious metals industries. The new MIDEX analyzer uses state-of-the-art X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology and proprietary beam focusing techniques to ensure the easiest, most accurate measurement results with no destruction of the metallic sample.

High precision focusing of the system's X-ray beam means that the sample itself, or the region analyzed on the sample, can be very small. This allows precise analysis of irregular surfaces such as filagrees, fragmentary samples, and even metallic coatings.

Simple principle of operation

MIDEX spectrometers use an air-cooled, low-power X-ray tube for excitation. The beam excites the elements in the metallic sample, causing them to emit fluorescence radiation that contains information on the quantitative and qualitative elemental composition of the sample. An advanced semiconductor detector converts the fluorescence radiation into an output signal proportional to the spectral energies emitted. None of the sample material is destroyed, a significant benefit for manufacturers.

Headquartered in Kleve, Germany, SPECTRO Analytical Instruments is recognized worldwide as a technological leader in Arc/Spark, Glow Discharge, X-ray fluorescence, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP and ICP-MS), and High Performance Liquid Chromatography.
