"Spot" Alloy Analyzer Handles Curved Surfaces and Complex Shapes with Ease

For manufacturers attempting to analyze difficult metallic surfaces, this XRF analyzer could solve the problems.

Fitchburg, MA - July 24, 2003 - SPECTRO Analytical Instruments, Inc., a leading global supplier of analytical instruments and systems for the metals industries, has released a new alloy analyzer featuring a tightly focused X-ray beam designed for difficult-to-analyze surface geometries. In addition to "spot" analyses, the new micro-beam spectrometer can also be used for mapping-type applications by analyzing a number of points across a sample's surface.

SPECTRO's MIDEX analyzer features a low power, collimated X-ray beam that produces a measurement spot with a diameter of only .7mm. This enables the instrument to be used for virtually any non-destructive alloy analysis task, including measurement of curved surfaces such as brake drums, wire and tubing, extremely small samples, high value scrap, and the complex sample geometries found throughout the automotive, aerospace, and general manufacturing industry.

The MIDEX analyzer employs energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) technology and incorporates significant technology improvements including use of high-resolution detectors and evaluation models based on fundamental parameters of high value alloys. Precise factory pre-configuration enables immediate, "out of the box" analysis of all 80 elements from aluminum to uranium. Typical measurement times are less than 2 minutes, and typical accuracy of the instrument is ±0.15%. Virtually no sample preparation is required. An application report is available documenting the accuracy and repeatability of laboratory tests on various alloys including stainless steel.

SPECTRO Analytical Instruments, Inc., is recognized worldwide as a technological leader in Arc/Spark, Glow Discharge, X-ray Fluorescence, and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectrometry.
