Varian, Inc. Introduces New Generation of Polymeric Solid Phase Extraction Products for Pharamaceutical Applications

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 30 /- Varian, Inc. today introduced Bond Elut(R) Plexa(TM), a new generation of polymeric solid phase extraction (SPE) laboratory consumable products that deliver improved analytical performance, ease of use and a faster, more streamlined sample preparation process to pharmaceutical researchers involved in clinical and preclinical studies.

Sample preparation is crucial to scientists focusing on pharmaceutical research because they must remove salts, proteins, lipids, and other interferences prior to analysis with LC/MS/MS (liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry) systems, such as the Varian 500-MS ion trap and 320-MS triple quadrupole. Polymeric SPE products are an important addition to silica-based sorbents because of their ease of use, and simple extraction procedures for a wide range of analytes.

Bond Elut Plexa's advanced polymeric design, featuring a hydroxylated exterior and a polarity gradient within the pores, improves extract cleanliness and analyte recovery, resulting in improved analytical sensitivity and superior data quality. These improvements are achieved with very simple SPE methods, thereby minimizing or eliminating method development and streamlining method validation.

"Our acquisition of Polymer Laboratories, a world leader in polymer-based consumables, has allowed us to expand our SPE product line to include a polymeric material for our pharmaceutical customers," said Martin O'Donoghue, senior vice president of Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "We're now in a better position to offer a more complete range of laboratory consumable products for a broad array of pharmaceutical applications."

The acquisition of Polymer Laboratories Ltd. in November 2005 was strategic to the advancement of the company's goal to grow applications-based consumable products to become a larger portion of the business. Varian, Inc. supplies a broad range of scientific instruments and laboratory consumable products for life science applications. The company maintains a balanced approach to enhancing and expanding its products for life science and industrial customers.

Varian, Inc. is a leading worldwide supplier of scientific instruments and vacuum technologies for life science and industrial applications. The company provides complete solutions, including instruments, vacuum components, laboratory consumable supplies, software, training, and support through its global distribution system. Varian, Inc. employs approximately 3,700 people and operates manufacturing facilities in 13 locations in North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. Varian, Inc. had fiscal year 2005 sales of $773 million (excluding the divested Electronics Manufacturing business), and its common stock is traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol, "VARI."
