Original Press Release:

Tru-Lok® Spade Drilling System from Madison Optimizes Holder and Insert Performance

PROVIDENCE, RI -- The new Tru-Lok spade drilling system from Madison Cutting Tools, Inc. was designed with the specific objective of manufacturing a stronger, small diameter spade drill than previously available. After exhaustive engineering studies, Madison determined that the weakest link in the existing small diameter spade drilling systems were the strength of the holder. To compensate for this weakness, most spade drill manufacturers have augmented as much steel as possible up front on the holder, which in turn has necessitated the use of thin spade drill inserts. Madison determined that to optimize drilling performance and life, it was necessary to completely redo the holders including material selection, heat treat process and design. This made it possible for Madison to introduce thicker, small diameter spade drill inserts with resulting increase in strength and refined insert geometry. Madison's Tru-Lok spade drilling system is available in a variety of straight shank, flange type and Morse Taper shanks. In addition, Madison offers special holders such as quick-change, back piloted and combination drilling/secondary operation bars. Inserts ranging from 1/2 to 1-3/8 inch diameter are stocked in several grades of carbide and CPM high speed steel, and available in most common coatings. Tru-Lok spade drilling inserts in the lower range of the program (series 0 and I) are not interchangeable with other systems on the market, while the inserts in the upper end (series II) are interchangeable with several other systems. The new Tru-Lok system complements Madison's well know family of Duodex/Accusize spade drills, which are available from 1/2 to 5-inch diameter. Madison Cutting Tools, Inc., P.O.
