Southern Lithoplate Salutes America East Print Quality Contest Winners

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Southern Lithoplate, Inc. is pleased to announce that three Eastern newspaper partners that utilize SLP's digital plate solutions have earned industry recognition for print quality. The Villages (Fla.) Daily Sun, The Roanoke (Va.) Times and The Eagle-Tribune (North Andover, Mass.) achieved honors in the America East Print Quality Contest.

The Villages Daily Sun claimed the top prize in the 50,000 to 100,000 circulation category. The Daily Sun specializes in four-color, spot-color and black-and-white newspaper printing of minitab, tabloid and broadsheet publications. Lauded for printing excellence in previous America East and other newspaper association matchups, The Daily Sun produces award winning quality using Viper® 830 thermal CtP plates on its 24-unit DMG cold-web press.

"The Daily Sun and our commercial customers have very high expectations when it comes to print quality, and Southern Lithoplate works with us to achieve our goals," said Steve Infinger, Director of Operations. "We have great confidence in the consistency of their products and the reliability of their technical support. Proper dot gain is a big part of maintaining good reproduction from an electric image to a print image. Southern Lithoplate has helped us ensure that the dot gain is correct for our plates. If we ever have any questions or problems, the service response is quick and helpful."

The Roanoke Times took Third Place in the 50,000 to 100,000 circulation category. The newspaper, published by Landmark Media Enterprises, also relies on Viper plates. The Eagle-Tribune won Third Place in the 25,000 to 50,000 circulation category. Owned by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. and the lead property in a regional chain of daily and weekly newspapers in northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, The Eagle-Tribune prints the seven-day morning paper on Replica HSV violet plates.

"We congratulate all the participants who showed innovation, creativity and determination in their printing," said Steven Mattingly, Southern Lithoplate's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "We look forward to their continuing contributions toward a better future for the newspaper industry as a whole."

Newspapers from Pennsylvania to Florida vied for honors in the annual print competition, submitting a week's worth of live editions for consideration. A panel of five judges evaluated the submissions and provided extensive feedback on ink laydown, registration, photo reproduction, page alignment and overall print appearance. Winners will receive their awards at a special breakfast ceremony April 10 at the America East trade show and conference in Hershey, Pa. The Best of Show winner will be announced at that time.
