New Optically Coupled Solid State Relays Offer Superior Performance And Reliability For Telecommunications Applications



San Jose, CA - February 15, 2002 - Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) today announced the introduction of a new line of optically coupled solid state relays (SSRs). The SSRs are assembled using a superior coplanar structure compared to an over-under structure typically used in competitive SSRs. The coplanar structure provides a wider input-to-output isolation gap and offers additional margin for passing UL1459 line cross testing. In many cases, Fairchild SSRs combine a higher maximum operating voltage with lower on-state resistance. These benefits, along with bounce-free operation, solid state reliability, and current limiting circuitry, make them ideal for telecommunications applications. These include on/off hook switches, dial-out relay switching, ring injection relays, general switching, and ground start applications in speaker phones, cordless phones, answering machines, fax machines, and desktop computer modems.

The solid state relays are available in four models: HSR312, HSR412, HSR312L, and HSR412L. All consist of an AIGaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a photovoltaic generator that drives a power MOSFET detector, and all feature 4,000Vrms isolation. The HSR312 and HSR312L are capable of switching loads up to 250V, while the HSR412 and HSR412L are capable of switching loads up to 400V. The HSR312L and HSR412L employ active current limit circuitry that enable the devices to withstand current transients.

The new relays feature a dual MOSFET output configuration that allows for series or parallel connection. Parallel connection of the MOSFETs provides lower maximum on-state resistance and higher maximum load current for all models, while series connection provides lower active current limit for the HSR312L and HSR412L models.

The solid state relays are available in a 6-pin through hole or a 6-pin surface mount dual in-line package. The latter is available in tape-and-reel with 1,000 devices on a 13-inch (33mm) diameter reel. All solid state relays are UL standard 1577 and UL standard 508 certified (CSA and BABT certifications are pending).
