Clare Introduces 800V, 10A Solid State Relay to Launch New Power Product Family

Beverly, MA - July 8, 2003 - Clare, Inc., an IXYS company (NASDAQ:SYXI), today announced the immediate availability of the CPC1978J power OptoMOS® solid-state relay (SSR). The CPC1978J is an optically coupled SSR capable of blocking voltages up to 800V, has load current handling capability up to 10A and offers a low on resistance of 2.3 Ohms. It is packaged in the unique i4-PAC(TM) pioneered by IXYS and enables Clare to offer the highest voltage/current SSR in the smallest available form factor.

The new CPC1978J power relay combines the best of both Clare and IXYS technology. The product is based on Clare's traditional strengths in photovoltaic chip design and manufacture, leadframe design and multichip packaging, and combines that with IXYS' power MOSFETs and power package and substrate technology.

The i4-PAC(TM) provides Clare with a significant competitive advantage in the power relay market. It is part of the IXYS family of ISOPLUS packages and features a unique process where
the silicon is soft soldered onto the Direct Copper Bond (DCB) substrate instead of the usual copper frame. The DCB ceramic not only provides 2500Vrms isolation capability from the leads
to the backside of the package but also enables a very low thermal resistance (0.45 K/W from junction to heatsink) compared to conventional external mounted isolation material. Sample
quantities of the CPC1978J are now available.

Due to the powerful combination of voltage and current ratings, the CPC1978J is ideal for use in a variety of applications including motor controls, robotics, medical equipment, railroad and traffic controls, consumer appliances, industrial controls, test and measurement equipment and I/O subsystems.

"The introduction of the CPC1978J is a significant milestone for both Clare and IXYS," commented Nathan Zommer, President and CEO of IXYS. "It not only capitalizes on the unique technological strengths of both companies but demonstrates the combined capabilities of the engineering teams."

"The CPC1978J is just the beginning of an entire new power relay product family enabling Clare to extend performance beyond its existing IA current range," said Mark Heisig, VP of Business
Development at Clare. "This opens up a variety of new industrial, transportation and medical markets for Clare while also adding diversification to our customer base. With this new
technology now fully qualified and ready for production, Clare is quickly expanding its product line up to and beyond 10A."
