Caterpillar Introduces the 500E-Series Vibratory Soil Compactors



PEORIA, Ill. - Caterpillar Inc. announces the introduction of the CP-563E, CS-563E, CS-573E and CS-583E vibratory soil compactors. The new 500E-Series Vibratory Soil Compactors feature the industry-proven productivity and reliability that have made the 500D-Series the preferred choice of earthmoving contractors world-wide. Plus, there are many new features that make the new 500E-Series even more productive, reliable and durable.

The 500E-Series Soil Compactors have operating weights ranging from 11.1 - 15.7 metric ton (12.2 - 17.3 U.S. ton) and features the exclusive Caterpillar® dual pump propel system that provides excellent gradeability and blade performance. The dual pump propel system provides separate hydraulic flow to the rear wheels and the drum for exceptional tractive effort in soft underfoot conditions or steep slope applications and allows for superior control on a grade in forward and reverse.

The CS-563E and CP-563E are designed for high compaction performance in most typical applications where common fill lift thickness is less than 30 cm (12"), or where density requirements do not exceed 95 percent of standard Proctor.

The CS-573E is designed for high compaction performance in tough applications where common fill lift thickness is greater than 30 cm (12"), or where density requirements exceed 95 percent of standard Proctor.

The CS-583E is designed for high compaction performance in very demanding applications where common fill lift thickness is greater than 45 cm (18"), or where density requirements exceed 98 percent of standard Proctor.

High tractive effort, especially useful on steep slopes and thick lifts, helps increase production and expands the application range for 500E-Series models. The dual pump system provides separate balanced flow to the rear axle motor and drum drive motor. This system provides superior tractive effort in both forward and reverse operation.

The rear axle also incorporates a limited slip differential for smooth and quiet torque transfer. The smooth transfer of wheel torque also increases the axle service life. The limited slip differential provides continuous power in soft or slippery conditions by transferring torque to the wheel with traction.

The new 500E-Series are powered by a six-cylinder Caterpillar 3056E ATAAC, turbocharged and aftercooled electronic diesel engine with a gross power rating of 150 hp @ 2200 rpm. The engine is certified to meet EPA Tier 2 emissions regulations. Because it's turbocharged the 3056E can operate at altitudes as high as 3000 m (9900 ft) without derating. The engine is equipped with an Electronic Control Module (ECM) and provides improved emissions and optimal performance through electronic timing and fuel delivery.

The ECM also allows advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities using Electronic Technician (Cato ET) which a service technician can access by plugging in a laptop PC to the connector on the right side of the steering column.

The operator's station on the 500E-Series Soil Compactors is nearly identical to the 500D-Series Soil Compactors. An adjustable steering column enables the operator to position the steering wheel to a desired position giving the operator greater leg and knee room. The tilt steering column also moves out of the way for easy entrance and exit from the operator's seat. The steering column offers more leg and knee room for a comfortable working environment. Machine gauges are located on the adjustable front steering column for easy reference during machine operation. The instrument panel contains the fuel gauge, vibration per minute (VPM) gauge (optional), and a nine-light LED fault indication panel.

The fault indication panel alerts the operator by providing both visual and audible warnings when abnormal conditions exist in the engine or hydraulic systems.

The propel lever and parking brake switch are located to the right of the operator's seat for convenient one-hand operation. The grouped controls feature a height adjustable, padded wrist rest that can be positioned for operator comfort. The optional leveling blade is controlled by the operator's right foot to provide simple operation of machine propel, steer and blade functions simultaneously.

The suspension seat is fully adjustable to include fore and aft positions, bottom cushion height, suspension stiffness, flip-up armrests and a 76 mm (3") wide retractable seat belt.

A bolt-on, two-post ROPS/FOPS canopy or a ROPS/FOPS cab is available. These configurations may be standard in some market areas and optional in others. On machines equipped with a ROPS/FOPS canopy, the platform is enclosed by handrails and features angled foot rests for sure footing and support when working on a slope.

Low noise levels both at the operator's station and at ground level allow greater operator comfort and less noise emitted to the surrounding environment. A standard rubber floor mat on the operator platform provides sure footing and also helps to further reduce noise and vibration transmitted to the operator. Four large isolation mounts isolate the operator platform from the machine frame for reduced vibration transfer to the operator's station.

Improved operator visibility and excellent service access are achieved with the 500E-Series sloped rear hood design. The one-piece fiberglass hood allows for excellent visibility to the outside edge of the rear tires and to the rear of the machine from the operator's station. The sloped hood allows the operator to see obstacles measuring 1 meter (3' 3") high and 1 meter (3' 3") to the rear of the machine. In the front of the machine, there is unrestricted visibility to the drum for precise operation.

Dual amplitude is standard on the 500E-Series which expands the application range for these vibratory soil compactors. The large spread between high and low amplitude makes it easier for the operator to adapt compactive effort to changes in lift thickness, soil characteristics and density requirements while maintaining top performance.

The 500E-Series uses the patented Caterpillar eccentric weight system with two pod-style weight housings within the drum. This design enhances reliability and makes servicing easier. The eccentric weight features an enclosed casting with repositioning steel shot on the inside. The direction of the weight shaft rotation determines high or low amplitude, which is controlled from the operator's station. This system provides long service life by eliminating heavy weights slamming together and wedging, causing metal chips that contaminate the system.

The pod-style weight housing is a sealed chamber inside which the eccentric weight spins. The pod is assembled and sealed in a "clean room" at the factory to ensure that the internal components are clean and free from contaminants. The housing has double seals to help guard against contamination once installed.

Replacement is much easier with the pod-style design. The pod can be exchanged while the drum stays horizontal. Simply remove the old pod and replace it with a new one.

Because of the decreased risk of contamination and the use of synthetic oil, the change interval for the bearing lubrication oil is 3 years/3000 hours.

An optional vibration per minute (VPM) gauge and variable vibration frequency enhance the productivity of the 500E-Series compactors by allowing the frequency to be better matched to varying job conditions.

Other options include an enclosed cab with or without factory installed air conditioning; a transmission guard; rear mounted steel scraper for the smooth drum models; polyurethane scrapers on the front and rear of the drum on the smooth drum models; a compaction indicator; rotating beacon; a hydraulic lift cylinder to raise and lower the operator's platform and a two-piece padfoot shell kit is also available for the CS-563E and CS-573E. A leveling blade is available for the CS/CP-563E and CS-573E (available only as a Customer Special Order).

Service access is simple and convenient on the 500E-Series. The durable one-piece fiberglass hood tilts forward quickly and easily for exceptional access to the engine and cooling system.

The operator's station tilts forward to provide access to the hydraulic pumps, hoses and electrical components. A hand-operated hydraulic pump is standard on machines equipped with a cab and optional on machines equipped with a ROPS/FOPS canopy. The hydraulic pump operates a hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower either the operator's platform or cab.

The steps to the operator's platform swing-out to allow easy access and replacement of the hydraulic oil filters.

The hitch features sealed-for-life bearings that never need greasing. The steering cylinders feature remote grease fittings to simplify lubrication.

Other features that make servicing these machines simple include leak-resistant O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings, pressure test ports, So0oS(SM) valves and ecology drains.

Hydraulic hoses are held securely in place with polyurethane routing blocks. The blocks separate hoses helping ensure that they do not rub on one another. All hoses are protected to help reduce damage during work in confined applications.

Hose routing for the leveling blade is protected across the top of the yoke from debris with a steel cover to reduce the possibility of rubbing or catching on an obstruction.

The 24-volt electrical system is protected by nylon-braided wire harnesses and all wires are color-coded and numbered. All weather connectors are used to ensure high system reliability.

The radiator is rear mounted for easy service and access. The isolated cooling system increases the cooling capacity by not drawing warm air from the engine into the radiator.

The oil cooler is also hinged at the bottom to allow it to be tilted away from the radiator to improve access and cleaning.

Hydraulic pumps and motors common with other Caterpillar equipment makes servicing easier for mechanics.

The CP-563E, CS563E, CS-573E and CS-583E have been designed to comply with applicable OSHA regulations.
