NEC Electronics America Announces New 3.5-Inch System-on-Glass LCD Module for Display of High-Definition Images in Mobile Devices for Industrial Applications

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 19 -- NEC Electronics America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative liquid crystal display (LCD) solutions in the Americas, today announced the successful development by NEC LCD Technologies of a 3.5-inch (8.9 centimeters diagonal) system-on-glass (SOG) LCD module whose quarter high-definition (QHD) array of 960 x 540 pixels enables the reproduction of images in resolutions over 300 pixels per inch (ppi). Integration of semiconductor systems on the glass substrate contributes to the module's small size, while technology based on low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) rather than amorphous silicon contributes to the module's narrow frame.

The recent trend favoring compact devices and portable and handheld instruments has led to the popularity of small-size LCD modules in industrial applications. Until now, however, manufacturers of industrial and other types of mobile devices have found it difficult to employ conventional LCD modules due to constraints in display size, weight and power consumption. Requirements for high brightness levels and high resolutions also posed challenges. The new SOG LCD from NEC resolves these issues by delivering superior picture quality in a small form factor, making the module suitable for a range of applications in today's industrial and professional fields.

"System-on-glass LCDs offer a breakthrough solution for mobile device designers who want high-resolution displays but must keep the overall size of their designs small," said Dr. Shigehiko Satoh, associate vice president and general manager, displays strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. "Going forward, NEC is committed to expanding the application of SOG LCDs in the industrial and mobile markets and to developing greater technology advancements that produce even higher picture quality."

The new SOG LCD module delivers an ultra-wide color gamut that exceeds 100 percent of the NTSC color space and a high luminance level of 350 candelas per square meter (cd/m2). Due to the high transmissivity of LTPS thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, NEC LCD Technologies was able to optimize the module's backlight system and color filter and thereby achieve a higher level of balance between color and luminance, resulting in the type of astonishingly clear and vivid color reproduction that has been lacking in small-size LCD modules to date.

Pricing and Availability

Successful mass production trials for the SOG LCDs have been completed and samples are scheduled to be available in Q1 2007. For pricing, contact NEC Electronics America at 1-800-366-9782. (Pricing, availability and specifications are subject to change without notice.)
