Overview

Large retailers, distributors, and suppliers (such as consumer-packaged goods, consumer electronics, and over-the-counter pharmaceutical companies) are leading the charge to promote and adopt global data synchronization. The global data synchronization vision is enabled by the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) which comprises the GS1 Global Registry and a federation of interoperable, certified data pools. GS1 is the international organization that leads the effort to establish the standards upon which retailers and suppliers communicate using the GDSN.

Various industry studies, led by organizations such as the Global Commerce Initiative (GCI), A.T. Kearney, and Cap Gemini have quantified the potential dollar savings of the global data synchronization process. Savings can be realized in many ways, such as increased speed to market for new items, improved purchase order accuracy, and a reduction in shelf out-of-stocks.

Even with the establishment of the GDSN, however, business leaders within retail, distributor, and supplier organizations face internal challenges before they can fully leverage the GDSN. In the case of retailers, for example, they must be able to augment the product information they receive from their suppliers to fully represent the information needed throughout their organization. Suppliers, on the other hand, need to ensure that the information they send to their retailers is accurate. Distributors potentially face both of these needs.

IBM Global Data Synchronization for WebSphere® Product Center provides a strategic solution to retailers, distributors, and suppliers for their global data synchronization initiatives.
