Cincinnati Machine's FREEDOM E-LOG(TM) Offers Easy-to-Use Software for Dependable Tracking of Production Equipment Up Time and Availability

CINCINNATI, OH (September 4, 2002) -Cincinnati Machine introduces FREEDOM E-LOG(TM) Field Reliability Evaluation Electronic Log, a network-based, low-cost and easy-to-use electronic logging software for reporting production equipment up time and availability. The full range of the FREEDOM E-LOG capabilities can be seen in operation at Cincinnati Machine's IMTS 2002 Booth #8101.

FREEDOM E-LOG tracks events at individual machines or cells in a plant and creates either bar or pie charts to explain production events. This powerful software operates through a server PC installed in a facility's internal network to monitor data
traffic from the machine. The server PC maintains a database on machine performance that can be viewed as intranet web pages from any desktop PC within the plant to track production on each machine.

FREEDOM E-LOG addresses the need to communicate and understand machine tool availability and up time performance as a basis for objective corrective action, said Jim Dallam, manager of technology development at Cincinnati Machine.

"Data collection done in most manufacturing operations today is often labor intensive, is carried out for only one special purpose, and is difficult to maintain over time," Dallam said. "The traditional methods also often lack a common definition of various terms and for the allocation of time intervals for specific causes. FREEDOM E-LOG remedies all of those problems."

Based on guidelines for uniform measurement and reporting of production equipment availability published in the Association for Manufacturing Technology's (AMT) "Production Equipment Availability," FREEDOM E-LOG divides total time of machine operation during a 24-hour day, seven day week period into six allocation categories:
o In-Cycle Time-The time the equipment is operating and machining parts.
o Not In-Cycle Process Time-Time during normal production for part setup, gauging parts, in-process inspections, operator adjustments, replacement of perishable tooling, and housecleaning.
o Repair Time-Time the equipment is incapable of operation due to a malfunction and subsequent repair of one or more of its components, subunits, or units.
o Delay Time-Unexpected events that keep the equipment from operating, such as process difficulties, operational errors, unavailability of user-supplied operating or maintenance staff, parts and materials.
o Scheduled Downtime-The plant is operating but the machine is not scheduled for normal production.
o Plant Shutdown-Time that the plant is closed and unavailable for equipment operation.

Though many machine tool builders recognize the need for software that performs the logging function and several offer a variation of this software, FREEDOM E-LOG takes the tracking of production equipment up time and availability to an entirely new
level.

Currently available only for Cincinnati Cincron cell machines and stand-alone machines with the Siemens A2 100 CNC, FREEDOM E-LOG will expand to support machines with the Siemens 840D, Fanuc 16iCNC, and other vintage make and model controls later this year, Dallam said.

Cincinnati Machine is a leading global manufacturer and supplier of CNC machine tools, such as turning centers, vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers/cells, 5-axis machining centers, universal machining centers, profilers, routers and composite processing equipment. Additionally, Cincinnati PLUS(SM) provides the most comprehensive package of service and support available in the industry today. Industries served include aerospace, heavy equipment, fluid power and automotive, as well as small job shops.
