Software provides chemical-name indexing system.

Press Release Summary:

MAI-Chem(TM) helps researchers find and index or tag documents that contain variations of chemical names and compounds buried in collections of electronically stored information. First, concepts are compared against proprietary knowledge domain. Program then takes retrieved list of tagged concepts and analyzes their association with other words in document. Words and expressions identified are further compared to database of synonyms and related chemistry phrases.

Access Innovations Now Offering MAI-CHEM(TM), New Chemical Name Indexing System

Fast-Processing Software & Taxonomy Dramatically Improve Ability to Pinpoint Variations of Chemical Names, Compounds in Large Collections of E-Content

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO (June 24, 2004) -- Access Innovations, specialists in electronic publishing and information management, said today that it is now offering its proprietary MAI-Chem(tm) chemical name indexing system for chemical research.

MAI-Chem gives researchers and chemical information specialists dramatic new power to find and index, or tag, documents that contain variations of chemical names and compounds buried in large collections of electronically stored information, such as a database of patent documents, collections of in-house technical reports or an archive of professional journal articles. It is designed for research-based organizations and departments in the agricultural, chemical, geological, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and related fields, as well as academia, government agencies and professional service providers working in those arenas.

"Because variations in the naming of chemical compounds are virtually unlimited, identifying documents that contain a specific chemical name or compound has long been a challenge in chemistry and chemical research," said Marjorie M.K. Hlava, Access Innovations president and chairman. "Our MAI-Chem program goes a long way to overcoming that obstacle. It is a boon for chemical researchers, librarians, archivists and patent data storage specialists."

Added Hlava: "This is a vital area for information managers and researchers, and their organizations. The ability to best manage chemical research by finding, indexing and storing relevant documents quickly and accurately goes to the core of new product development, competitive tracking, protection of intellectual property rights, regulatory compliance and much more."

MAI-Chem features a new taxonomy (an indexing system that creates a structure to associate words and phrases) developed by Access Innovations.

MAI-Chem processes text through a sophisticated multi-phase approach. Concepts are compared against a proprietary knowledge domain, including variations of chemical names that might be found in a longer string of characters in a chemical compound name.

MAI-Chem then takes the retrieved list of tagged concepts and analyzes their association with other words in the document. For example, the word "acid" by itself does not indicate a chemical compound but would if in proximity to the word "hydrochloric."

Words and expressions identified are further compared to a database of synonyms and related chemistry phrases. A list of targeted chemical names and compounds is then presented to the user to choose those most appropriate to the document for indexing.

"We are particularly excited by the speed of computing offered by MAI-Chem," said Hlava. "For indexers processing documents in large reservoirs of data, speed is critical."

MAI-Chem is available by license from Access Innovations. It can be used in batch or real-time interactive mode, and has the versatility to work with any search software. It is based on the popular Data Harmony M.A.I.(tm), the market leader in automatic classification and categorization software, offered by Access Innovations.

"We developed MAI-Chem because we saw a real need to better manage chemical research materials," said Hlava. "It is installed and working well, so now we are eager to demonstrate the program to additional companies and organizations that need to do a better job of managing their intellectual assets."
