McAfee, Inc. Helps Small to Large Businesses Fight Changing Spammer Tactics With Weekly Rule Set Engine Updates

Updated RENUs for McAfee SpamKiller Offer Small to Large Businesses Tangible Improvements in Detection

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb 2 -- McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE), the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, today announced that the McAfee(R) SpamKiller(R) product family now delivers more granular levels of detection with weekly rules set engine updates (RENUs). McAfee SpamKiller, which is part of the McAfee Secure Content Management solutions group, provides both reactive and proactive spam detection techniques which, combined with increased incremental updates and technology improvements, offer small to large businesses the most up-to-date protection against unwanted email.

McAfee has moved from monthly to weekly RENUs based on changes in spammer tactics, which include the collaboration among spammers and virus writers to hijack computers, steal identities and online accounts. Phishing, which is a form of spam, is also being used to direct recipients to a fraudulent site where personal information is captured. In addition, viruses like Mimail create peer-to-peer networks of hijacked machines used to launch spam or denial of service (DoS) attacks. With weekly RENUs, McAfee SpamKiller can offer small to large businesses tangible improvements in detection, including new spam rules to prevent spam and phishing attacks, URL rules and enhanced accuracy in recognizing spam.

According to a recent IDC report, "Worldwide Antispam Solutions 2004-2008 Forecast and 2003 Vendor Shares: What Is Being Done About Spam," the volume of spam messages sent daily worldwide over the past two years has jumped from 7 billion in 2002 to 23 billion in 2004.

"Spammers have become increasingly sophisticated, making it necessary to continuously update our spam rules," said Christopher Bolin, executive vice president and chief technology officer at McAfee, Inc. "McAfee weekly RENUs are based on monitoring for new URLs and other 'markers' from spammers, which help us to refine our rules-this creates very accurate rules with low false positives. Continuous updates help provide McAfee SpamKiller with excellent detection rates, proactively protecting our customers from new types of spam email."

McAfee SpamKiller is designed to deliver secure content management technology at the edge of the network to help businesses optimize resources, increase productivity and reduce their exposure to threats. The updated rules help customers prevent new sophisticated methods of spam, prevent virus infections and phishing attacks, reclaim network bandwidth and address issues such as regulatory compliance and legal liability.

McAfee SpamKiller delivers unmatched spam protection and performance with an out-of-box highly accurate scoring system to determine whether a particular email is spam. With the extensive set of rules that run behind McAfee SpamKiller, each email receives a positive or negative score to determine its overall spam rating, and once spam is detected, messages are either delivered to the end-users inbox, personal junk mail folder or a system-wide junk folder.
