GE Energy Announces Availability of Ecomagination-Certified Software Platform for Emission Reduction

UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIF.-May 24, 2007-GE Energy announced the availability of its software platform, Knowledge3 (Kn3), which has been ecomagination certified by GE as a tool to help reduce emissions from power generation and oil and gas plants. It has already been installed at several U.S. utilities.

The Kn3 software platform received GE's ecomagination certification after completing the company's rigorous environmental and operational evaluation and was cited as one of a number of successful projects during GE's ecomagination launch in California. Ecomagination is GE's commitment to address challenges such as the need for cleaner, more efficient sources of energy, reduced emissions and abundant sources of clean water.

"Kn3 has sophisticated modeling technology that can predict plant performance, which can be used to simultaneously reduce emissions, improve efficiency and increase availability. It is capable of automatically controlling plants to achieve these goals," said Daniel Heintzelman, president of GE Energy's services business. "In addition, it can be used to detect problems with equipment and processes in advance, which prevents emission exceedances."

The Kn3 platform is installed at the 240-megawatt Birchwood Coal Station in Fredericksburg, Va., where it has lowered NOx emissions by 10 percent while improving efficiency by 0.5 percent.

The Xcel Energy Utility Innovations group also is installing Kn3 at the Hayden plant in Colorado, where the software was designed to reduce NOx by 20 percent while controlling furnace slagging and associated generation losses. In addition, Kn3 is being used at a southern utility to detect errors in emission measurements from a gas- and oil-fired boiler to prevent environmental reporting violations and accidental emission exceedances.

GE Energy's optimization and control group helps industrial customers in the power generation, oil and gas and process industries through products and services that maximize the economic performance of operating assets. Its solutions include digital and mechanical control solutions, mechanical condition monitoring and plant asset management expertise, fuel management and plant performance optimization technologies, harsh environment sensing and comprehensive services and training.
