WEDM supports service providers
A service provider is an organization that serves networked customers. Service providers are typically wireline and wireless telephone companies or Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) who are seeking to offer new services and open new revenue streams between themselves and connected consumers.

WEDM can extend the functions of the service provider's subscription management applications and database management systems to include management of many thousands of devices and their related resources, such as applications, from a variety of device manufacturers. It is particularly suited for wireless or wired providers who want to use open standards to support their business-to-consumer subscription service.

WEDM uses the device management open standards from Open Mobile Alliance and the OSGi Alliance to help providers solve service-related problems and reduce the total cost of customer support. WEDM extends the customer service and distribution capabilities of the provider's administrators. It supplies APIs for integrating value-added applications that can help improve the operating environment for delivering service.
