Software minimizes sort job CPU time and elapsed time.

Press Release Summary:

Sort/merge/copy utility, SyncSort VSE v3.6, utilizes facilities of IBM z/VSE and VSE/ESA operating systems while implementing algorithms and SORTWK I/O techniques aimed at reducing CPU time and elapsed time for most sorts. Processing time is also reduced for sorts with large VSAM files and when Dynamic Storage Manager is active. Supporting record lengths up to 65,535 bytes, solution includes JOIN facility, DUPKEYS control statement, and INPFIL/OUTFIL parameters.

SyncSort VSE Release 3.6 Cuts Sort Job CPU Time and Elapsed Time and Provides New Features

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., June 28 -- Syncsort Incorporated is pleased to announce its latest release of SyncSort VSE, a high performance sort/merge/copy utility that exploits the advanced facilities of the IBM z/VSE and VSE/ESA operating systems. SyncSort VSE release 3.6 represents the latest development in Syncsort's ongoing commitment to deliver unmatched sort performance with new features to solve today's data processing challenges while increasing productivity.

Reduced Sort Time

SyncSort VSE 3.6 implements enhanced algorithms and improved SORTWK I/O techniques, reducing CPU time and elapsed time for most sorts. Processing time is also reduced for sorts with large VSAM files and when the Dynamic Storage Manager is active. The new release also increases the number of work files available to sort applications without requiring modification of programs or application JCL.

New Features

SyncSort VSE Release 3.6 introduces a new facility (JOIN) that combines records from two input files having identical field values. The joined records then can be used as input to a sort or copy function. A new control statement (DUPKEYS) deletes records with duplicate SORT/MERGE keys and can replace specified numeric fields with calculated sum, minimum, maximum or average values. A new SORT statement parameter (ERASEWK) erases data written to SORTWK data sets. Additionally, the new release supports record lengths up to 65,535 bytes.

New INPFIL/ OUTFIL parameters improve processing of input and output files, enabling applications to perform the following functions:

-- Write each output record multiple times via the new REPEAT parameter
-- Select a sample of records for an OUTFIL group
-- Write records or groups of records in rotation among output data sets
-- Set a default character to pad variable-length input records shorter than the minimum record length
-- Set a fill byte for missing field bytes in a variable-length to fixed-length record conversion
-- Truncate variable-length input records longer than the LENGTH parameter on the RECORD statement
-- Define a byte pattern to be deleted from the end of a variable-length record
-- Enable a mixture of fixed and variable-length record input files to be converted to a consistent format before sorting
-- Enable a mixture of fixed and variable-length record output files to be produced after sorting

New INREC/OUTREC functions improve reformatting of input and output records with new date and time formats, a modulus function, a TRAN parameter to translate from upper to lower case and vice versa, and a new edit pattern. Additionally, the new SYNCHSTO Utility Program increases efficiency by determining information about variable-length record files, which can be specified in subsequent executions of sorting to improve performance.
