Motorola Announces Management Solution for WiMAX and Mobile Devices
Next generation NBBS accelerates carrier introduction of wireless services and devices
HORSHAM, Pa., Feb. 7 / -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today unveiled its next generation NBBS device management system. With the new 5.0 version of NBBS, Motorola has extended its industry leading device management solution to serve wireless carrier needs - enabling broadband customer premises equipment (CPE), femtocell and mobile device management for WiMAX, GSM/UMTS and CDMA operators. With the new version of NBBS, carriers can accelerate the introduction of new services and devices.
Motorola's NBBS is a software platform that enables operators to remotely access, configure, and troubleshoot the full portfolio of consumer devices - including mobile phones, CPE and femtocells. This helps to lower operators' costs by reducing truck rolls and lowering operational expenses. It also helps to increase revenues by accelerating new service introduction. NBBS is a scaleable, carrier-grade system that manages devices, home networks and services. In addition, NBBS enables an excellent end-user experience, improving the relationship between the carrier and the subscriber.
"This new version of our NBBS management platform changes the device management game. It supports our customers' changing needs as they deploy the next generation of wireless services and devices," said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president, Motorola Broadband Solutions Group, Motorola Inc. "Our NBBS platform now goes far beyond the activation of new devices; it allows our customers to manage their customers' home network and services."
Motorola's new edition of the NBBS management platform includes support for the following device management protocols:
OMA DM - for WiMAX gateways and handsets as well as 3G handsets
SNMP - for cable modems and cable set-top monitoring
TR-069 - for DSL gateways, WiMAX gateways, VoIP and IP video
Telnet - for legacy CPE, firewalls, network security and devices
The 5.0 version of NBBS is ideal for any operators implementing fixed mobile convergence (FMC) strategies. It is a key element for device management over access technologies including DSL, WiMAX, cable and RAN. Some of the latest carrier services optimized by NBBS include femtocells, voice-over-IP (VoIP), WiMAX, IPTV, video on demand (VOD) and gaming.
NBBS performs the device management role for the Motorola Femtocell solution. As announced today, Motorola has unveiled its first 3G femtocell CPE: the 8000 Series - Motorola Femtocell Access Point and the 8100 Series - Motorola Femtocell Ethernet Gateway. Designed for high quality of service levels, these are the first two units from a portfolio of Motorola CPE that will be commercially available in the second half of 2008.
NBBS is also part of Motorola's overall Service Assurance program - enhancing Quality of Service (QoS) at the edge of the network. This portfolio includes the eCare support solution, allowing the carrier help desk to manage software applications in addition to devices. Service Assurance supports all of Motorola's CPE product line.
The NBBS device management system helps Motorola deliver fully integrated and customizable media solutions for the delivery of personalized, rich media experiences to the consumer and enables service providers to deliver revenue generating applications and solutions.
