PMMI Unveils Packsafe(TM) Risk Assessment Software

Arlington, VA, March 22, 2002 - The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) today announces the release of Packsafe(TM) - Risk Assessment Software for Packaging Machinery. Packsafe(TM) is a Windows-based, software tool that helps companies identify and alleviate potential hazards when designing packaging machinery. Packsafe(TM) satisfies the risk assessment documentation requirements for CE Mark for European markets as well as the ANSI/PMMI B155.1 voluntary safety standard.

"Packsafe(TM) software is a fast, easy-to-use tool for engineers and safety professionals to identify hazards using the 'safety through design' concept," says Maria Ferrante, director of technical services, PMMI. "It provides designers a systematic method for eliminating and controlling hazards during the design process, when it is less costly to make changes."

Packsafe(TM) is an important part of any company's risk management program. Any person involved in the process of manufacturing packaging machinery or designing a packaging line can use the software to document and design out safety issues. It also facilitates a uniform approach to risk assessment throughout an organization.

"In this age of litigation and product liability, risk assessment plays a critical role with both designers and purchasers of packaging machinery," added Ferrante. "Packsafe(TM) is a powerful software product that identifies hazards and alerts you to remedy actions for existing hazards."

Packsafe(TM) also helps companies control costs as manufacturers can address hazards and make modifications at the outset of the project rather than during the manufacturing process.

PMMI offers its members a number of tools and products that support their risk management efforts. In addition to the Packsafe(TM) software, PMMI oversees the updating of the American National Standard Institute/PMMI B155. 1, American National Standard for Packaging Machinery and Packaging-Related Converting Machinery, Safety Requirements for Construction, Care and Use. PMMI also offers members a business insurance program through a partnership with Armfield, Harrison and Thomas and The Atlantic Mutual Companies. Finally, PMMI offers members education and training programs to support engineers in the field with keeping up with the various standards that apply to machine design.

"PMMI is dedicated to ensuring that safe and efficient machines are produced by its members and the industry at large," said Ferrante. "Our efforts are aimed at providing the latest tools available so that members can offer the most technologically sound equipment in the world."

The software is available to members and non-members.
