Avocent Enhances Its Data Center Management Software to Help IT Better Manage Virtual Server Sprawl and Power Issues

Customers Gain Virtualization Support for XenServer with new DSView 3 Software; Vertical Power Distribution Units introduced

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Nov. 5 -- Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ:AVCT), a global leader in IT Operations Management, today announced the latest release of DSView(R) 3 Management Software, now with additional support for access and control of complex hybrid virtual and physical server environments. New is support for Citrix XenServer virtual environments, enabling customers to use a single browser-based management tool for a federated view of multiple virtual and physical servers in a single screen -- important for managing virtual servers that are in a constant state of change. DSView 3 Software was the industry's first to manage hybrid virtual-physical environments when support for the VMware Virtual Infrastructure became available a year ago.

"A recent Avocent survey polling nearly 300 IT managers shows 89% of those polled are virtualizing servers -- a major jump in the adoption rate over just last year, showing the increase in virtual sprawl is becoming much like the physical server sprawl of the last decade, said Ben Grimes, CTO of Avocent. "This adoption of virtualization technology is due to increased hardware and power costs, which brings additional management challenges. With this version of DSView 3 software, we expand our heterogeneous support of virtualized environments by adding Citrix XenServer support, so IT administrators now have an even more robust set of tools to manage some of the most complex issues within their environment, power and virtualization."

Enterprise data center managers, in particular, must be enabled to scale their infrastructure quickly to meet changing business demands. Avocent provides that granular insight for the rapid correction to problems as well as for cost-effective operations of data centers. DSView 3 Software provides improved visibility into server environments, with alerts, so that if a host server starts to have an issue, virtualized servers can quickly be moved to another host physical server to ensure business continuity.

Customer benefits of the enhanced DSView 3 Software include:

-- Support for XenServer virtual environments -- IT administrators can manage XenServer virtual machines through the same interface they already use for hardware and VMware management, saving time and money while unifying control of virtual environments.

-- Support for Windows Server 2008 -- Today businesses with Windows environments can upgrade their servers to Microsoft's newest platform, without concern about DSView 3 Software compatibility.

-- Support for new iPDUs -- Auto-discovery of Avocent's new, intelligent energy management-focused power strip hardware products are supported.

-- Common Access Card (CAC)/Smart Card support -- Enhanced security to meet HSPD12 regulations, required for secure login and management of government systems.

-- General ease-of-use enhancements -- Improved GUI layout and simplified menus make DSView 3 Software one the industry's most intuitive data center management consoles.

These enhancements improve IT management for all business customers, but the upgrade particularly addresses the needs of administrators in the enterprise data center, defined as IT environments with 1,000 servers or more.

"IT is on the verge of a new age in which virtualization, consolidation, standardization, and automation will help IT operations deliver dependable IT infrastructure services on a large scale, cheaply," writes Simon Yates in the December 2007 Forrester report Five Trends That Will Shape The IT Infrastructure And Operations Profession In 2008. "As (companies) look ahead to the coming year and make decisions about how to invest (their) infrastructure budgets, Forrester believes that (they) should evaluate management tools that can cope with virtualization. As virtualization spreads, with consolidation, simplification, and business continuity as the driving forces, management, security, and performance challenges will increase.

In addition, Avocent today announced new vertical models of its intelligent power distribution units broadening its line of iPDUs launched last month. PM 2000 and PM 3000 models provide outlet-level metering and switching allowing better management of growing power consumption costs. The ability to support up to 22kW of power in a single rack through a mix of low and high power outlets makes the PM 2000 and PM 3000 models an ideal solution for higher rack densities typically found in most virtualized environments.
