KUKA Robotics Announces Release of PalletTech Software Version 3.3 for Palletizing Application Development

New Software Addresses Demands for Flexibility and Ease-of-Use in Complicated Robotic Palletizing Applications

Clinton Township, Michigan - May 11, 2005 - KUKA Robotics Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of industrial robots, today announced the release of its PalletTech palletizing software version 3.3. The new version of the company's industry leading palletizing software was developed to meet the increasing need to address flexibility and ease-of-use issues in complicated robotic palletizing applications. The software is a suite of application development and run time tools that reduces engineering and development time and enables the out-of-box implementation of complicated robotic palletizing applications.

"Palletizing customers have been demanding the small batch flexibility of a robot, without complex engineering and programming," said Joe Campbell, director of strategic alliances for KUKA Robotics Corporation. "PalletTech delivers complete process flexibility in an intelligent point-and-click environment."

The increased need for flexibility in palletizing cells is being driven by manufacturer's increased product mix, shorter operating runs to reduce inventory float, custom pallet patterns for retail displays, and custom pallet patterns for big box retailers. These needs have resulted in the increasing demand for flexibility in palletizing cells; including cell layout, infeed conveyors, grippers and patterns.

KUKA Robotics' PalletTech software version 3.3 suite consists of two modules, the PalletEdit tool and the PalletRunTime application package. PalletEdit is a PC based offline engineering and programming tool that allows development of complete palletizing applications in a GUI environment, including optimized pallet patterns and robot motion profiles. The tool features a point and click interface and requires no spreadsheet or formula interfaces. New features in version 3.3 include a multi pick-independent drop functionality, programmable gripper interference zones at the pallet and conveyor, support for up to 30 infeed conveyors and 30 pallets and support for linear slides. The tool also includes unlimited logical gripper configurations, enabling maximum use of flexible programmable grippers, with full zone control and sensor combinations. Also now available is either manual pallet development, or with optional PalletPro, fully automatic pattern generation and sequence development. PalletRunTime is a robot based application package that executes routines developed in PalletEdit. It includes multiple fault and error recovery strategies, manual or automatic hot restart, auto change over including conveyor clear and partial pallet run out, and optional PLC control.

KUKA Robotics Corporation, with its parent company KUKA Roboter GmbH, Augsburg, Germany, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial robots, with an annual production volume approaching 10,000 units, and an installed base of over 60,000 units. The company's 5 and 6 axis robots range from 3kg to 570kg payloads, and 635mm to 3700mm reach, all controlled from a common PC based controller platform. KUKA robots are utilized in a diverse range of industries including the appliance, automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, logistics, food, pharmaceutical, medical, foundry and plastics industries and in multiple applications including material handling, machine loading, assembly, packaging, palletizing, welding, bending, joining, and surface finishing.
