Beckhoff Announces Improved TwinCAT® Scope Tool for Scientific Automation
Redesigned Scope features improved toolset for measurement in industrial systems
MINNEAPOLIS, September 30, 2008 - In order to best utilize the extended graphics features of new PCs, such as DirectX, Beckhoff Automation has redesigned the Scope tool within the TwinCAT® automation software suite. This provides TwinCAT users with an impressive array of measurement technologies in a flexible software environment.
The improved TwinCAT Scope is part of Beckhoff's Scientific Automation initiative. Scientific Automation from Beckhoff promotes integration of additional measurement functions in the software PLC. This is in addition to PLC functionality, sequential control and motion control technologies already inherent to TwinCAT. Industrial PC technology with high-performance CPUs offers an ideal platform for this merging of these advanced industrial technologies. Simple configuration, advanced graphics and extended functionality complete this dynamic toolset for measuring tasks.
Graphical display of motion curves is essential for optimizing controllers and setting drive axes. The new TwinCAT Scope has been divided into two applications: the Logger and Viewer. The Logger, which can be installed in a Windows CE control system, records the data from different channels with time stamps and saves them intermittently. The data can come from different PCs and different software devices, including PLC and motion control packages. The Viewer fetches the data from the Logger by means of Beckhoff's Automation Device Specification (ADS) and displays it.
The configuration of TwinCAT Scope is also carried out in the Viewer. A software assistant supports the search for variables to be recorded. Following selection of the controller, it is possible to browse inside the corresponding PLC. Individual variables can be selected simply. The new modular design approach of TwinCAT Scope allows Beckhoff to add new functionality without the user having to reinstall a whole new product. Some examples are the support of filters on the Logger side such as Fast Fourier Transformation, import and export functionality and advanced chart types.
