Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a leader in systems management solutions that reduce the total cost of owning information technology, today announced the new Altiris® Inventory Solution® for Handhelds, with current support for PocketPC and Palm devices, to extend its mobile device management capabilities. IT administrators can now gain added control over increasingly mobile and diverse IT environments, reducing the growing costs associated with a mobile workforce.

"Technology is moving away from the connected and static desktop model and users are aggressively adopting mobile devices either as a complete computing platform or as a peripheral productivity
device," said Poul Nielsen, Altiris VP of marketing. "As mobile devices penetrate corporate IT environments, IT administrators will require management solutions that help reduce the total cost of ownership of these devices. Inventory Solution has been an industry leading asset discovery and management tool and now its capabilities have been extended to bring mobile device data under the same roof as data from the rest of the environment."

According to research authored by Stephen Drake, Program Manager, Mobile Infrastructure Software at IDC, a leading provider of global IT research and advice, "The worldwide market for mobile device management (MDM) will increase at a CAGR of 42.6%, from $121.3 million in 2001 to $715.1 million in 2006."

Computer analyst Jeff Breckon of Salt River Project, a water and electric utility that serves approximately 750,000 customers in Arizona, recognizes a trend toward increased use of wireless and mobile devices within their IT environment and a resulting need for automated management capabilities for these devices.

Breckon said, "Increasingly our end users are using handheld devices as complete computing platforms and this trend is going to continue as we add additional wireless LAN access. The
proliferation of handheld devices is creating a more pressing need for IT to better track and manage these elusive devices. Going forward we will require an automated handheld management solution that can both discover and track the specifics of mobile hardware and software platforms. The total cost of owning our handheld devices will increase at an unacceptable rate unless solid management technologies and practices are implemented."

Inventory Solution for Handhelds provides exceptional flexibility and functionality to gather and track details such as installed software, hardware and operating system specifics, and user information. Zero-footprint technology eliminates the installation of special software on clients saving time and
money. Administrators can access and manage mobile device data with built-in, Web-based administration and reporting.

Specific to Palm and Pocket PC platforms, Inventory Solution for Handhelds enables IT administrators to discover and manage the software, drivers, services, network data (TCP/IP settings) and hardware components of devices, eliminating time and guesswork wasted in managing mobile devices. Further streamlining MDM, Inventory Solution for Handhelds provides administrators the option to post device inventory, via cradle synchronization or wireless/HTTP connectivity, to the Altiris management infrastructure.

Inventory Solution for Handhelds integrates with other Altiris systems management solutions for complete management of numerous LAN, WAN and mobile devices via a Web--based management console.
