Original Press Release:

Realviz® Stitcher Gateway to Catia: Integrating Computer-Generated Models Into Real Environments

The French company REALVIZ is developing and marketing two new products that expand the rendering capabilities of CATIA V5 solutions, the best known and most popular CAD software from Dassault Systèmes, and ENOVIA Portal DMU. These products are the REALVIZ® Stitcher® CAA (Component Application Architecture) V5 Based and the REALVIZ Compositing CAA V5 Based. By enabling 3D PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) users to integrate any virtual object product into real environments (film or image), these products remove the boundaries between the real and virtual world for the first time ever.

REALVIZ Stitcher CAA V5 Based enables V5 users to generate high quality panoramic images for immersive interactive imaging in 3D environments. Stitcher makes it possible to easily paste and superimpose photos taken from the same viewpoint, horizontally as well as vertically, to create professional quality panoramas that can then be used in Photo Studio and Real-Time Rendering to place V5 models into real environments.

The second product, REALVIZ Compositing CAA V5 Based, allows users to integrate static or animated V5 models such as images, panoramas or video sequences into real environments, and then simulate a realistic rendering of their product.

Dassault Systèmes already provides its Solutions 3d PLM customers with a complete range of powerful and intuitive applications allowing them to speed up the process of design review for their products. Part of the V5 portfolio, Photo Studio and Real-Time Rendering allow users to generate easily and quickly high quality photo-realistic images and animations of parts and products. In addition, applications of the ENOVIA Portal DMU range include advanced collaboration capabilities enabling the review and simulation of digital mock-up (DMU) thanks to the implementation of optimal quality visualization, navigation and communication tools.

The combination of solutions from Dassault Systèmes and those, based on V5, from REALVIZ, is revolutionizing virtual mock-up review, particularly for styling, design and marketing professionals in the automotive, aerospace and consumer goods sectors, as well as shipbuilding. The ability to integrate their V5 models in order to produce a real "film," starting from the first stages of the development cycle, will allow users to give their feedback on the product right from the earliest stage. This reduces the number of physical prototypes required and considerably speeds up the project validation process.

"Our partnership with REALVIZ completes our 3d PLM rendering solutions," states Séverin Lanfanchi, R&D ENOVIA Portal manager at Dassault Systèmes. "The possibility of integrating all virtual mock-ups within a truly animated environment will improve communication about products and allow users to give free rein to their creativity. For Dassault Systèmes customers this partnership will revolutionize the process of producing presentations of their virtual products."

"Thanks to our partnership with Dassault Systèmes, CATIA V5 users will benefit from years of development in the field of robot vision," explains Dominique Pouliquen, managing director and co-founder of REALVIZ. "Based on technologies developed at INRIA (France's National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control), REALVIZ has developed a complete range of image processing software which is already being used by a large number of content creators. We are proud to present the CATIA V5 user community with the most advanced 2D/3D mixing technologies, which, up to now, have only been available to large post production and special effects companies."

With this application, CATIA V5 users can build very high quality panoramas, integrating 3D models into real environments; retouch panoramas using the most popular image editing software while offering the user advantages in terms of speed, creation and above all productivity; design very high resolution panoramas to be exported into CATIA V5: the application enables the various photos making up the panorama to be stitched quickly and easily; skillfully manage lens distortion: distortion errors are automatically corrected; and stitch images of a flat object such as maps or posters.

Finally, to ensure consistency, the application has a function that blends the colors from one image to the next, with various types of rendering enabling in particular the creation of matte paintings or occlusions. Panoramas can also be exported into the most common 3D creation and animation software to create true photo-realistic 3D environments. This application was developed from the REALVIZ Stitcher photo stitching engine, one of the most popular and well-known panorama creation software packages and used by professional photographers, architects and 3D artists.

The technology for image stitching and geometric evaluation is a result of many years of research at INRIA-Sophia Antipolis by the team led by Professor Faugeras. It not only enables the superposition of images with a geometric accuracy of a fraction of a pixel, but also the removal of transitions between the constituent images using color equalization and local adjustment.

REALVIZ is one of many start-up companies spun off from INRIA in the field of image processing that relate to medical imaging, search engines for images on the web, 3D triangulation technology applied to CAD, the audiovisual sector, etc. The company recently announced the release of a consumer application, Stitcher EZ, which allows photographers of all levels to quickly create high quality panoramas, allowing them to produce excellent printed copies or to enhance Web pages or e-mails. This application gives the general public a creative ability equal to that of digital imaging professionals.

About the CAA V5 Software Community Program
The CAA V5 Software Community Program is dedicated to companies wishing to develop, market and sell applications based on CAA V5 and integrated with CATIA, ENOVIA and DELMIA V5. The program enables the expansion of Dassault Systèmes' PLM solutions to cover the whole life cycle of the product. Mutual customers therefore benefit from a wider product range meeting their industrial needs. CAA V5 (Component Application Architecture) is the open development platform for PLM solutions from Dassault Systèmes. Spatial Corp. is the principal sales network for CAA V5 for marketing, sales and support services. Further information on CAA V5 is available at: caav5.com .
