Jive Software's Openfire 3.2 Adds Voice Calling to Real-Time Collaboration Products

Jive Software Is First Company to Deliver the Jingle Protocol to the Enterprise

PORTLAND, Ore., March 19 // -- Jive Software announces the availability of Openfire 3.2 (formerly known as Wildfire), the next generation of its award-winning real-time collaboration (RTC) server. Marking the first use of the Jingle protocol for an enterprise application, Openfire 3.2 is voice-enabled allowing users to turn their instant messaging conversation into a phone call with the simple click of the mouse.

Using Openfire 3.2, voice calls can be initiated from one party's computer to another via the chat client. Placing the call is as simple as clicking on a name in the contact list and selecting the call option. The connection uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology, and parties can communicate using VoIP headsets, phones or similar devices plugged into their computer's USB ports.

In addition to leveraging the reliable and streamlined Jingle protocol, the XMPP-based Openfire 3.2 server also integrates with existing phone systems that use SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) for call control and voice mail.

"Instant messaging client applications are becoming the hub of collaboration for a lot of businesses," said Jive Software CEO Dave Hersh. "Extending this valuable desktop real estate with open standards-based voice capabilities is a huge jump for innovative businesses to build out competitive advantage through collaboration."

Openfire 3.2 administrators can quickly configure Jingle and SIP services for their users via an intuitive web-based interface so that users have no configuration headaches and all provisioning is controlled at the server. In addition, Openfire 3.2 just uses one client for chat and voice, lessening the desktop footprint and further simplifying the user experience.

Additional Jive Software Openfire 3.2 features include:

o The ability to add chat to any web page without installing
additional software.
o Deeper presence information via integration with Outlook calendars.
o A web client that enables users to chat from any machine with a
modern web browser.
o Single sign-on to reduce the number of times users enter their
credentials.
o The ability to handle more than 30,000 user connections.
o Improved certificate management, making it simple for administrators
to provide robust security.
o Multiple Adium(TM) emoticon packs to customize the instant messaging
client.

Jingle's Bells and Whistles

Jingle is an extension to the XMPP protocol that allows for simpler deployment of features like voice, video and file transfer. The protocol grew out of the technology created for the GoogleTalk service and was contributed as an open standard to foster interoperability.

Pricing and Availability

Openfire 3.2 comes in a no-cost open source edition and an Enterprise Edition (delivered as a plug-in). The Enterprise Edition is available for direct purchase from Jive Software for $15 per user per year
