Design Tools with Advanced Capabilities for Managing Requirements

Placitas, NM - July 26, 2002 - Excel Software began shipping a major upgrade of its popular MacA&D and WinA&D software design tools. Requirements provide the foundation that drives the entire development process. The new Developer edition of MacA&D 7.4 and WinA&D 3.4 software provides an integrated solution
for managing requirements with enhancements to identify, specify, track and control requirements. Other new features include the ability to expand and collapse groups of dictionary entries, support for multiple language projects and supplemental user-defined fields for collecting design information.

Each requirement entry is uniquely named and defined. The entry name dialog helps to enforce a user-defined naming convention. Requirement entries can be grouped together and displayed as either a flat entry list or in a hierarchical tree structure. Users can zoom in and out of the tree structure or show and hide larger groups of entries partitioned into namespaces.

User-defined definition templates help developers capture a structured collection of fields in each requirement entry such as Status, Priority, Author, Date, Assigned, Category, Effort, Summary and Description. The new Requirement Matrix presents this information in a spreadsheet-like interface using custom views and queries. A collection of column names is referred to as a view, while a query specifies a collection of rows. The selected view determines which fields of the entry are displayed in each column of the matrix. The selected query displays each entry meeting the query criteria as one row in the matrix.

Standard views and queries are provided to quickly change what data is displayed, how its sorted and organized and focus the user on a specific group of entries that meet the defined criteria. Several standard HTML reports nicely format requirement data for printing or sharing with other developers. Matrix data can be imported and exported as tab or comma delimited text files for sharing data with other applications like spreadsheets, project management or scheduling programs.

The tool allows users to concurrently edit separate product and system requirement documents and link entries between documents. Requirement entries can also be linked to models, text specifications, code files, test procedures and documents created with other applications.

MacA&D runs on Macintosh computers with OS 7, 8, 9 or X. WinA&D runs on Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 or XP. Both come in four editions; Standard $495, Desktop $1295, Educational $845 and Developer $1995.
