New AGV Technology Offers Quick System Configuration

Q-CAN, a new product from Siemens Dematic, offers quick, configurable automation for AGV systems at significant cost savings.

DETROIT, MI-(APRIL 8, 2002)-Siemens Dematic's Rapistan Material Handling Automation Division introduces Quick Configurable AutomatioN [Q-CAN(TM)] technology for Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems at the NA2002 trade show. Q-CAN offers a standard PC program that allows an operator to design, demonstrate and implement an AGV system within days-saving time and money.

According to Garry Koff, AGVS Technology Manager for Siemens Dematic, "The system requires no site-specific, custom software and can be easily re-configured as requirements change. Customers can even license the use of the Q-CAN Designer PC program and re-configure their system themselves, without our direct involvement."

Q-CAN provides ease in designing non-wire AGV path layouts and defining system operation, as well as supports remote AGV call and dispatch functions. The program requires no CAD or software experience and features a Windows-like GUI, so it's easy to learn and operate.

The Q-CAN Designer "system demonstration" function allows users to test a system's operation on screen and fine tune its parameters before implementation. Koff stated that because design time is collapsed and no custom software is required, Q-CAN systems cost considerably less than conventional AGV systems. Long term costs are also reduced, because Q-CAN systems are so easy to modify and adapt to changing operational needs.

Siemens Dematic offers a full line of tow, unit load and fork AGVs. The vehicles are available in a wide range of standard models and load capacities and can be easily configured with Q-CAN.
