SonicWALL Extends Email Security Suite to Combat New Email Attacks and Ease the Burden of Compliance

Version 5.0 Extends Spam Blocking Capabilities, Provides Added Protection Against High-Volume Email Attacks and Offers More Robust Compliance Options

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 13 /-- SonicWALL, Inc. (NASDAQ:SNWL), a leading provider of continuous data protection and network, web and email security solutions, today announced a major upgrade to its Email Security offering. Version 5.0 of SonicWALL Email Security delivers powerful new protection from spam and high-volume email attacks in addition to providing comprehensive and easy-to-use compliance options to help organizations more easily meet policy and regulatory requirements.

SonicWALL's Email Security suite, which filters approximately 5 billion messages monthly for customers around the world, was introduced earlier this year after SonicWALL's acquisition of MailFrontier. The security suite delivers high-performance, easy-to-use inbound and outbound email threat protection for organizations of all sizes.

According to a recent report by market analyst firm IDC, spam has climbed back up the priority list of IT managers and security departments, and it ranks as the third-greatest threat to enterprise security.(1) Of the 750,000 individuals who have taken the SonicWALL Phishing IQ Test, approximately one in three misjudge phishing emails. Half of the mail volume typically seen by email servers is comprised of brute force attacks, such as directory harvest attacks, denial-of-service attacks and other mail floods. In addition, compliance requirements further complicate the IT manager's job and increase the burden on IT organizations to maintain a clean and compliant email system.

SonicWALL Email Security 5.0 was developed to help address these requirements by introducing significant enhancements in spam effectiveness, connection management and email compliance.

"Thousands of customers have standardized on SonicWALL Email Security to protect their organizations from spam, phishing, viruses, brute force attacks and compliance problems," said Gleb Budman, senior director, product management at SonicWALL. "In our constant drive to innovate for our customers, this latest release enables customers to continue to stay ahead of the threats while minimizing the time spent managing them."

SonicWALL enhanced spam effectiveness by introducing an image thumbprinting technology that enables its 1-million-user global SMART Network to provide reputation data on images in email. Unique among other image detection systems, SonicWALL's gathers good and bad reputations, thereby enhancing effectiveness while minimizing the potential of false positives.

To help customers threatened by high-volume attacks, SonicWALL has added robust denial-of-service protection, quality-of-service options and a manual IP firewall. This technology adds to SonicWALL's existing LDAP-based directory harvest attack protection to provide a system designed to exercise complete control over mail traffic.

SonicWALL Email Security 5.0 also enables organizations to address Sarbanes-Oxley, GLBA, HIPAA and other compliance requirements by leveraging new functionality, including:

-- Record ID matching (detect Social Security, credit card, and other pre-defined and custom records), pre-defined dictionaries (healthcare and financial), and pre-defined policies that complement powerful existing policy management and content filtering functionality to identify non-compliant messages.

-- Encryption routing using third-party products and built-in TLS encryption along with on- and off-box email archiving that extends existing remediation options such as log, block, route, copy to, or put in approval box.

-- Compliance reports that augment the existing reporting module and powerful email auditing functionality to provide a clear view of email traffic.

"More customers are coming to us with concerns about meeting regulatory compliance, including such topics as coping with rules that vary from state to state," said Jamie A. Stapleton, vice president of Computer Business Solutions, an IT and network security solutions company in Ashland, Va. "The new reporting features in SonicWALL Email Security address this issue with pre-defined compliance options that simplify the process and also provide tools to meet audit requirements."

The SonicWALL Email Security suite is available as hardened appliances or as standalone Windows software to be deployed on customers' existing servers. Available for the SMB and enterprise, SonicWALL Email Security 5.0 software and appliances, including a new 25-user software package, are available immediately. Pricing starts at just $195 for the Email Security software and $1,395 for the Email Security 200 appliance, plus a required annual subscription to dynamic threat updates.
