Original Press Release:

IBM Virtualization Engine Suite for Servers V1.1 Brings On Demand Services to Multiple Systems

Overview

The IBM Virtualization Engine(TM) can help your business improve the effectiveness of Information Technology (IT) as it enables individual distributed resources across the enterprise (select servers, storage, networking) to function cohesively as a single pool or entity. This allows more efficient access and management of resources across an organization by effect and need rather than physical location.

The systems services announced today, combined with the capabilities in systems technologies which are already available on applicable IBM hardware, can extend the functions of the platform operating systems to create the pooled environment. Systems technologies include the ability on select IBM hardware to enable virtual processors, virtual networks, and virtual I/O.

The Virtualization Engine consists of systems technologies and systems services. There are two suites that make up Virtualization Engine systems services - IBM Virtualization Engine Suite for Servers and IBM Virtualization Engine Suite for Storage. This announcement focuses on the Virtualization Engine systems services, which make up the IBM Virtualization Engine Suite for Servers, which can be ordered through Passport Advantage®.

Virtualization Engine Suite for Servers helps provide virtualization and management of resources across select systems, both in an individual server and across IBM and select non-IBM systems, in one simple, cost-effective offering. The systems services, which offer these capabilities, are available as a single suite, or optionally, most are offered as individual systems services components for customers who want to ease into their on demand experience or who already have some of the IBM components in their enterprise.

The Virtualization Engine Suite for Servers, which is referred to in IBM's ordering system as Virtualization Engine Services Multiplatform, consists of the following systems services:

· IBM Enterprise Workload Manager

· IBM Director Multiplatform

· IBM Tivoli® Provisioning Manager

· IBM Grid Toolbox V3 for Multiplatforms

· Base infrastructure - Virtualization Engine console, installer and common runtime

Virtualization Engine Suite for Servers may be complemented by the Virtualization Engine Suite for Storage which is available separately.
