Original Press Release:

IBM WebSphere Studio Application Monitor for Multiplatforms, V3.1 Helps to Analyze Application Performance and Assess Requirements for Future Growth

Overview
The Java(TM) 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) platform is increasingly
adopted by organizations to support e-business applications. This adoption is frequently accompanied by a set of challenges related to monitoring and ensuring application health. While J2EE provides a rich environment for defining business
logic, complex interactions between distributed, multitiered,
object-oriented applications pose a difficult management problem.

WebSphere® Studio Application Monitor (WSAM) for Multiplatforms
enables customers to perform in-depth problem determination and
performance analysis of mission-critical enterprise J2EE
applications. The technology allows enterprises to open up the Java "black box" to see what is specifically happening within the applications, as well as track and analyze their performance and resource consumption patterns over time. WSAM is a tool used by J2EE administrators, application support analysts, and subject matter experts during the pre-deployment planning phase and during production.

WSAM monitors heterogeneous environments and can provide both
high-level and detailed views of transactions in real-time. WSAM
also captures and stores resource utilization data at a transactional level, to help the IT staff analyze
historical trends and plan for future application growth. WSAM for Multiplatforms consists of two components:
o A central Managing Server that acts as the "brain" of WSAM.
- Gathers information sent by Data Collectors, processes it,
and displays it on a Web browser
- Monitors individual or groups of applications
- Generates operational performance alerts
- Stores all performance and availability metrics in a database
- Manages software levels
o Data Collectors run on the application servers being
monitored. They collect information on the applications
being monitored and on active transactions. Data Collectors are
available for AIX®, HP-UX, Linux(TM), Solaris, Windows(TM), and
zLinux.

Data Collectors for the WebSphere Application Server on z/OS® and Data Collectors for Customer Information Control System (CICS®) and Information Management System (IMS(TM)) are available as separate products. WSAM can monitor composite applications
spanning WebSphere, CICS, and IMS that use MQ as a transport
mechanism. WSAM also has the capability to monitor WebSphere
Portal.

Key prerequisites
Refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections.

At a glance
WebSphere Studio Application Monitor (WSAM) for Multiplatforms
enables J2EE administrators, application support analysts, and
subject matter experts to:
o Monitor and analyze the behavior of large-scale e-business applications
o Quickly take corrective actions to resolve problems
o Assess resource consumption and plan for future capacity
o Deliver a non-intrusive solution that does not require modifications to the application code
