Original Press Release:

Ingres Makes Icebreaker Software Appliance Generally Available

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 27 -- Ingres Corporation, the leading business open source database company, today announced the general availability of Ingres Icebreaker(TM), the first fully integrated enterprise-class database and operating system that dramatically lowers the cost and complexity of system maintenance and support. Ingres Icebreaker is designed to be a self-contained software stack, integrating the proven enterprise strength of Ingres 2006 with only those Linux operating system components required to support the Ingres platform.

Ingres Icebreaker represents open source innovation at its best. Collaborating with rPath, provider of the first platform for creating and maintaining virtual and software appliances, Ingres first introduced the proof of concept with the goal of providing users with a single, easy-to-manage environment in which the operating system becomes transparent and support is provided by one point of contact and unified maintenance stream. Just six months after introducing the concept, a dozen customers and partners have participated in the beta program providing positive feedback on the ease of use, ease of integration and simplicity of installation, configuration and maintenance.

"Ingres Icebreaker will revolutionize the industry," said Terry Suby, president of AcuStaf Software. "Database services such as business intelligence software should be very simple to build and deploy, but because of the way most software is sold today, we are often faced with the enormous burden of installing, maintaining, securing and administering multiple layers of software ourselves. As an Ingres Icebreaker beta participant, we are 100 percent committed to Ingres and very interested in implementing Icebreaker with our labor management solution because it eliminates unnecessary installation and maintenance work, allowing our IT team to focus on innovating at greater speeds and at lower costs."

Ingres Icebreaker includes only those parts of an operating system that are relevant for its use as a database appliance, reducing complexity and making more efficient use of resources. Additional benefits include:

oEase of installation -- Database and operating system are installed in a single step, faster than installing an operating system and database software from different vendors separately.
oLower costs of ownership -- Up front cost savings from a no license open source solution, as well as ongoing cost savings from ease of use and manageability.
oBetter deployment of time and resources -- Database administrators have more time devoted to other mission critical business applications from streamlined database maintenance.
oArchitectural evolution -- Instead of thinking in terms of operating system and database servers, database administrators can quickly deploy database services that are easily accessible through standard APIs.

"While other vendors continue to deploy more bloated and obtrusive software, Ingres has been doing just the opposite -- streamlining a solution," said Emma McGrattan, senior vice president of Engineering at Ingres Corporation. "Ingres Icebreaker brings together the power of business open source software with the economic benefits of a single, integrated software package. Never again will customers think of database and operating system servers the same. Instead, they will see the world in terms of data services that provide their businesses with greater flexibility, scalability and security."

Availability and Support

Ingres Icebreaker includes support for virtualization technologies, making it easy for customers to create consistent and new virtual environments for simplifying hardware decisions. Licensed under the GPL 2, Ingres Icebreaker runs on any x86-compatible, 32-bit capable, server hardware appropriate for Linux.
