WECO Expands Highly Reliable SMarTconn Technology SMT Interconnect Family for PCBs

974-D-SMD-DS Series' unique design provides high retention force for PCB I/O interconnect

MONTREAL, CANADA - WECO has expanded its SMarTconn® family of surface mount terminal blocks to include a 5.0 mm pitch SMT screw terminal block with fixed terminal bodies and an inclined tower for wire entry and screwdriver.

Designated the 974-D-SMD-DS Series, the terminal block supports 0.20 mm co-planarity specification. On the retention side of the connector, the 974-D-SMD-DS Series terminal block delivers robust solder joints and provides high retention of the component to the surface of the PCB. The terminal blocks are available in 2-6 poles and are constructed for reflow processes used in today's automated manufacturing systems.

The unique 5 mm pitch SMT terminal block design provides a reliable solution for PCB I/O interconnect, allowing wire and screw driver access at inclined 45 degrees. This feature is particularly beneficial for applications where the wire access parallel to PCB is blocked by PCB components.

Ideal for high-volume production systems, the 974-D-SMD-DS Series enables printed circuit board designers to migrate interconnect components from through-hole to genuine surface mount technology, increasing packaging efficiency, freeing-up PCB real estate, increasing manufacturing yield, and reducing manufacturing lead time. The SMarTconn genuine SMT design allows for soldering of components on both sides, further simplifying designs, reducing set-up costs and streamlining processes.

"The 974-D-SMD-DS Series is the only 5 mm SMT power connector in the industry whose "inclined tower" allows installation of terminal block anywhere within the layout of the PCB, contrary to PCB edge connectors where wire enters parallel with PCB. This advanced terminal block was created with the intent to offer the SMT industry a universal mounting solution adapted to the constraints of the reflow process," said Alex Cristescu, R&D Manager at WECO.

The 974-D-SMD-DS Series features rectangular flat leads and a wire entrance at a 45 degree angle to the PCB with a test wire pull-out force of between 70 to 150 N depending on the number of poles used. Products are shipped in tape and reel packaging and are supplied with a pick disc that works with standard pick and place tooling.
