Micro Design for Macro Speed

ERNI supplies high-speed SMT connectors for 10GBit/s systems

Midlothian, VA., December 15, 2003 - ERNI announced the availability of MicroSpeed, a 1.0mm connector system in SMT technology for high-speed applications. The modularly designed, shielded connector system consists of two terminal banks and two outwardly arranged shield plates. The MicroSpeed connectors are intended for space-saving board-to-board connections with a 5mm circuit board distance. It is equally suitable for differential and single-ended signals.

Areas of application include modern telecommunication and data transmission systems with speeds up to 10GBit/s as well as technologies in the fields of measurement, medicine and the government applications. Further, the SMT version can be processed fully automatically using the conventional SMT assembly and reflow-soldering process.

The longitudinal pitch of MicroSpeed connectors is 1.0mm and the transverse pitch is 1.5mm (for impedance purposes). The differential signal pairs can be arranged horizontally or vertically. Optimized crosstalk behavior is achieved with a vertical (transverse to longitudinal direction) configuration of the signal pairs and the pairing arrangement of signal and shield contact pairs. Measurements have demonstrated that crosstalk is less than 2% at 100ps, the reflection factor is less than 5% (board thickness 1.6mm), and have resulted in excellent eye diagrams for data speeds of 10GBit/s (FR4, 100mm trace lengths).

The impedance is 100 ohms for differential signals and 50 ohms for single-ended signals. While the signal terminals are done in SMT, the user can select between two terminal options for the ground contacts depending on the application: SMT or THR connection. The ground contacts also assure robust strain relief of the connector. The length of the connector modules is 27mm with 50 signal contacts and 2 shield plates, and they can be easily lined up with virtually no loss of space. The concept permits further numbers of pins in 6 steps up and down. The ERNI MicroStac power supply connectors are the perfect complement.

The MicroSpeed male multi-point connectors and the female multi-point connectors are supplied in tape-on-reel packaging. Further design features of the fully automatic placement: black-insulating bodies made of LCP for fast and dependable visual recognition, and a pre-mounted placement aid for easy gripping.
