Stackpole Electronics, Inc. Announces Retooled HPC Series High Power SMD Chip

Heatsink redesign dramatically improves mechanical strength and thermal conductivity...

RALEIGH, NC (May 14, 2007) - Stackpole Electronics, Inc. announces a product design improvement to the HPC series. The HPC series is a surface mount device with a .5 in by .5 in footprint capable of 5 watts continuous power in free air, using essentially the same amount of board space as typical 3 watt SMD wirewound devices. With 200 lfm or 400 lfm air movement the power rating improves to 10 watts and 12.5 watts respectively. These power ratings are achieved without exceeding a circuit board temperature of 105 degrees C which is the typical UL limit for power applications. The new patented heat sink design reduces the number of heat sink pieces from two to one and increases the material thicknesses, while still maintaining the exact dimensions of the previous device. The new design also simplifies pick and placement and individual part marking. The heat sink is anodized to provide 600 volts isolation.

Kory Schroeder, Stackpole Engineering Manager stated, "5 watt surface mount devices are becoming a bit more common. What isn't common is the ability to handle 5 plus watts of power without imparting an unacceptable amount of heat into the circuit board. This has historically been the limitation for T0-220, D2 Paks, and SMD wirewounds and was the basis for development of the HPC."

The HPC series is available in resistance values from .025 ohms up to 250K, in tolerances down to 1%. Typical TCR is 150 ppm and inductance is less than 2 nH. The HPC has a unique recommended solder pad land pattern; however current designs using a traditional D2 Pak can be made to accept an HPC with minor pad layout modifications.

Typical pricing for the HPC 12 is $1.00 each minimum quantities but is volume dependent. It comes in standard tape and reel packaging, 200 pcs per reel. Standard lead time is 10 weeks.
