Press Release Summary:

Mini-SPMs provide motor control for energy-restricted white goods such as washing machines and air conditioners. Offering thermal resistance, 7 modules each integrate 3 high-voltage ICs, 1 low-voltage IC, 6 IGBTs, and 6 fast recovery diodes. Combining analog and discrete technologies in one package, devices are housed in 44 x 26.8 mm Mini-DIP package, range from 3-30 A, and include under-voltage lockout and short circuit protection.

Original Press Release:

Fairchild Semiconductor's 3 A to 30 A Mini-DIP Smart Power Modules (SPMTM)Offer Best-in-Class Thermal Performance for Consumer Appliances

Mini-SPMs provide superior inverter-based control for energy-efficient 3-phase motors

South Portland, Maine--April 7, 2005--Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) today introduced a series of Smart Power Module (SPMTM) products that provide efficient motor control for energy-restricted white goods such as washing machines and air conditioners. Fairchild's Mini-SPMs allow inverter system designers to meet energy-efficiency requirements and ensure reliability with cost-effective solutions that lower part count in consumer applications. The new Mini-SPM series consists of a suite of seven modules offering best-in-class thermal resistance. Each module integrates three high-voltage ICs (HVICs), one low-voltage IC (LVIC), six IGBTs and six fast recovery diodes in the industry's most compact Mini-DIP package. Designers can achieve increased design flexibility for the entire power range from 0.3 kW to 3.0 kW, as these devices range from 3 A to 30 A in a single package outline.

"By using these devices, 0.3 kW-rated applications can be easily upgraded to 3.0 kW simply by selecting different Mini-SPM products," said Taehoon Kim, vice president of Fairchild's High Power product line. "Best-in-class thermal resistance is achieved through Fairchild's Direct Bonded Copper (DBC) technology, enabling Mini-SPM devices to reach the targeted power rating of 30 A in ultra-compact packaging."

Designers are charged with conserving board space and streamlining end applications. Fairchild's Mini-SPM series reduces board space by utilizing an ultra-compact 44 mm x 26.8 mm Mini-DIP package, and by incorporating built-in HVICs that provide an optocoupler-less, single supply IGBT gate driving capability. The Mini-SPM series offers designers high reliability with integrated under-voltage lock out (UVLO) and short circuit (SC) protection. Fairchild's Smart Power Modules integrate analog and discrete technologies in one package, reducing board space and overall costs.

The Mini-SPM series is the latest example of Fairchild's continued commitment to meet performance and environmental requirements for a broad range of consumer applications. Fairchild is the leading supplier of products that optimize system power covering the entire spectrum from 1 V to 1200 V and micro amps to over 600 amps. Fairchild has the insight and experience in designing and manufacturing power products, and partners closely with leading manufacturers to provide components that answer compelling design challenges in a broad array of market segments.
