Schneider Electric Introduces World's Most Flexible Smart Motor Starter

Modularity simplifies machine customization, assures "just right" starter solutions

PALATINE, Ill. - August 4, 2003 - Every machine designer has experienced the panic caused by a last-minute customer request for a design change. Now an innovative smart motor starter from Schneider Electric can help eliminate those complexities and costs for both machine builders and their customers. The Telemecanique® TeSys(TM) U-Line motor starter combines the traditional power and control functions of a motor starter with built-in intelligence and a modular structure that provides the ultimate in design flexibility.

"The TeSys U-Line self-protected starter embodies intelligent integration: quick selection, easy installation and modular components that reduce the amount of inventory that must be stocked, " said Tom Fowler, motor control products manager for Schneider North America. "Just two power bases cover all power ranges up to 32A. These power bases can be installed, connected and tested regardless of the ultimate type and level of control voltage selected. This allows OEMs to 'pre-build' a machine, and then customize it for each customer's requirements."

Synchronous design of the mechanical and electrical system comes as standard with the TeSys U-Line. The openness of the device means that the system can be configured or modified at any time. Modular control units for various protection and control functions, along with plug-in function modules, also simplify retrofitting. Communication modules and interface modules for various network protocols make it easy to integrate the new starter into any automation system.

"This extremely compact starter takes up 50 percent less space than conventional solutions," said Fowler. "Pre-assembled power connections also minimize installation time. Integrated control circuits and an ingenious connector/wiring system assure quick and error-free assembly and installation."

The starter's motor current and control voltage are determined by the control unit selected, which can by snapped into the power base by hand, without any wiring. Broad setting ranges and AC/DC multi-range voltages enable just six control units to meet the requirements of any application.

Control unit selection is determined by the complexity of a machine. The standard version of TeSys U-Line is designed for standardized, basic motor starter applications, while the expandable version for complex machines has additional functions such as pre-alarm or motor load display. The highest level or multifunctional version offers numerous protection and control capabilities.

A TeSys U-line starter can significantly reduce machine idle times and provides direct access for operators to important motor starter operating information, such as pre-alarm, motor data display, remote rest, differentiated error display and memorization of the last five errors. In addition, PowerSuite software can be used to parameterize the multifunctional control unit locally or remotely using a PC or pocket PC.

The new motor starter can operate at ratings of up to 20 HP at 480 VAC 15 with a breaking capacity of 50kA (130kA with limiter) /400V. As no welding is required, conformance to IEC 947-6-2 or UL 508 Type E self-protected starters is assured.
