Original Press Release:

Standalone Dual Smart Battery Charger with SMBus Interface Requires No Firmware

MILPITAS, CA - July 14, 2003 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC1760, a standalone level 3 smart battery charger with a battery selector for charging two battery packs. As a standalone smart battery charger, the LTC1760 automatically controls charging, discharging and battery selection, eliminating the need for a host SMBus microcontroller and associated firmware.

The LTC1760 meets the new SMBus 1.1 specifications and is backward compatible with version 1.0. The IC guarantees precision charge voltage and current accuracy within 0.2% of the value reported by the battery for accurate gas gauging, improved charge time and safety as well as charging to maximum capacity. The IC's proprietary power path architecture extends typical battery run times by up to 10% and reduces charge times by 50%. The LTC1760 is housed in a compact 48-lead TSSOP and meets the required autonomous charging in applications such as battery backup in mass storage and RAID systems, portable diagnostics, security systems and industrial/military portable computers.

The LTC1760 includes three primary functions required to construct complete smart battery system management. The analog sections include a high efficiency DC/DC step-down synchronous controller and a power path function to support simultaneous charging or discharging of both batteries. Switching between power sources (wall adapter to battery or between batteries) occurs in less than 10us to prevent power interruption upon battery or wall adapter removal. The SMBus section of the LTC1760 is capable of interfacing with an SMBus host controller or two smart batteries, providing dual port operation and maintaining alarm monitoring for charging at all times. The LTC1760 charges 2- to 6-cell Li-Ion batteries, 6- to 18-cell NiMH/NiCd and 6V to 28V lead-acid batteries.

Pricing for the LTC1760 starts at $7.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
