Slotted Optical Switch performs non-contact object sensing.

Press Release Summary:

Series OPB200 is packaged in opaque injection-molded polyester, minimizing assembly's sensitivity to ambient visible light and near-infrared radiation. During operation, output phototransistor switches from ON state to OFF state when opaque object is inserted into gap between emitter and sensor. Slotted housing features .200 in. gap and 0.320 in. slot depth. Phototransistor's collector-emitter breakdown voltage is 30 V, with emitter-collector breakdown voltage of 5 V.

OPTEK Slotted Optical Switch Performs Non-Contact Interruptive Object Sensing

CARROLLTON, Texas (December 28, 2004) - For machine and automation applications requiring a non-contacting sensor, TT electronics OPTEK Technology has developed a compact infrared slotted switch.

Designated the OPB200 Series, these slotted switches are packaged in an opaque grade of injection-molded polyester, which increases reliability by minimizing the assembly's sensitivity to ambient visible light and near-infrared radiation.

"Its small size and low cost make the OPB200 ideal for general purpose machine switching applications in assembly line automation, machine automation, equipment security and machine safety systems," said Steve Coble, OPTEK Product Line Manager.

During operation, the output phototransistor switches from an ON state to an OFF state when an opaque object is inserted into the housing's gap between the emitter and the sensor, breaking the infrared light beam.

The infrared LED packaged in the OPB200 Series devices can be driven with DC forward current up to 50mA. It has a maximum reverse DC voltage of 5V, and a maximum power dissipation of 75mW. The output phototransistor's collector-emitter breakdown voltage is 30V, with an emitter-collector breakdown voltage of 5V. Operating temperature range for the OPB200 Series devices is -25°C to +85°C.

The OPB200 Series devices are packaged in an opaque polyester slotted switch housing with a .200" (5.08mm) gap, and a 0.320" (8.13mm) slot depth. The through-hole device mounts to a PC board with a footprint is of 0.520" (13.2mm) x 0.240" (6.1mm), with a board-mounted profile of 0.400" (10.2mm).

OPTEK will provide assembly services for volume orders of the OPB200 Series switches, including PC board mounting, second-level wiring or other design services.

Typical pricing in 1,000-piece quantities for the OPB200 Series devices is $0.90 each. Samples are available for immediate delivery, with production lead-times from stock to 6 weeks.
