Technidrill Introduces New Skiving/Roller Burnishing System to Improve Production Rates

Kent,OH: TechniDrill Systems, Inc., a global builder of deep hole drilling machines, has recently introduced a skiving/roller burnishing system to replace more time-intensive honing machines. The TechniDrill SB-100 system was designed to finish the inside diameter of seamless tubing to a eight (8) RMS surface finish at a penetration rate of 207" per minute. A workpiece with a 14.5" bore length requires less than 30 seconds to complete, compared to about 8 minutes using a honing machine. While a honing machine can complete just 8 parts per hour, the SB-100 can finish 120 pieces per hour, a 1400% production rate increase. TechniDrill and Sandvik Coromant combined their engineering skills to improve production rates, hole quality, and to help eliminate scrap parts. The SB-100 system is available with a diameter capacity up to 2.500" and a machining depth up to 25". Spindle speeds are variable up to 2800 rpm, and are powered by a 40 hp AC drive. Feed rates are controlled by a ball screw and servo motor and are variable from 50" to 300" per minute, with reverse feed up to 300" per minute. Cooling oil is provided to the tooling at 60 gallons per minute and up to 500 psi. According to Jim Sundberg, vice president of TechniDrill, "The Sandvik tooling skives the bore of the tubing at a very high feed rate, preparing grooves for the burnishing rollers. On the return stroke, the skiving tool is retracted to avoid scoring or marking and the burnishing rollers smooth the grooves to a fine finish between 8 to 10 RMS."
