Original Press Release:

Caterpillar Adds Two Smaller Models to Vertical-Lift Skid Steer Loader Line

Caterpillar introduces two smaller frame vertical-lift skid steer loaders. The Caterpillar® 232 and 242 Skid Steer Loaders feature a unique linkage that provides a lift height of more than 9 feet 11 inches (3.02 meters) and a reach of 30 inches (762 mm) at a bucket angle of 45 degrees.

The expanded height and reach - combined with rated capacities of 1,750 pounds (680 kilograms) for the 232 and 1,900 pounds (862 kilograms) for the 242 - make the skid steer loaders a perfect fit for the construction site. The skid steer loader configuration is ideal for higher stacking of pallets of bricks, concrete blocks and other materials. The vertical lift loaders also make easier work of truck loading both bulk and palletized materials.

A long wheelbase of 42.9 inches makes the models ideal for grading and provides operators with a comfortable ride. Additional applications that are well suited for the 232 and 242 Skid Steer Loaders include lifting pallets onto scaffolding; loading and unloading flatbeds; placing materials on low roofs and in storage facilities; and any other task where increased lift capacity, reach and height are required.

A complete line of Cat® Work Tools helps complete these tasks. More than 30 different work tools are available and include a multi-purpose bucket for cleanup and carrying, a grapple attachment for grabbing, a broom, and pallet forks. Hydraulic power available for driving these tools on the new Caterpillar Skid Steer Loaders is among the highest in the size class. The work tools and skid steer loaders were developed simultaneously and as a system to optimize performance. In addition, all Caterpillar Skid Steer Loaders are equipped with a mechanical quick coupler that lets workers quickly change work tools and move from one task to another.

The 232 and 242 build on the field-proven successes of the other Caterpillar Skid Steer Loaders and offer:

- low-effort pilot-operated hydraulics for ease of operation

- powerful Cat 3024C diesel engine (Tier II emissions control compliant) rated at 48 net horsepower for the 232 and the Cat 3034 diesel engine rated at 54 net horsepower for the 242

- an anti-stall feature for excellent digging performance

- easy serviceability and convenient service checkpoints

- unparalleled customer support from your local Cat dealer.

Ease of Operation

The 232 and 242 have been designed to keep the operator comfortable and to enhance operator efficiency. Ergonomic features such as low-effort controls, a padded armrest and a suspension seat option all reduce fatigue.

Pilot-operated joystick controls make it easy for those unfamiliar with the machine. More seasoned operators who have spent time on other equipment will quickly adjust to the controls. The left joystick controls the hydrostatic transmission speed and direction, and the right joystick controls the hydraulic loader functions (lift, lower, and tilt). Additionally, switches in the right joystick activate hydro-mechanical work tools. The control design eases operation and provides a clear, uncluttered cab floor.

The loader linkage, angled front steps and the ROPS/FOPS cab have been designed to optimize visibility to the work tools. Instrument panels are located in the upper right and left corners of the cab to further enhance visibility. And getting into and out of the operator compartment is simple due to a wide entrance between the twin tilt cylinders, convenient grab irons and deep, skid-resistant steps.

Performance and Versatility

Caterpillar Skid Steer Loaders are designed so that engine horsepower and robust torque allow the operator to run the machine at part throttle for quieter operation and reduced fuel consumption. High hydraulic power lets the Cat Skid Steer Loaders drive hydro-mechanical work tools with ease.

Serviceability

All routine maintenance is performed inside the engine compartment or outside the machines in easily accessible locations. The rear engine door opens 90 degrees to expose the engine lengthwise in the frame for access to the front, left and right sides of the engine. The radiator/hydraulic oil cooler assembly is mounted above the engine and tilts out of the way for unparalleled serviceability in the engine compartment. The grill also swings separately to allow easy cleaning of the cooling package. All filters are vertically mounted and spin into place, creating spill-free routine maintenance.
