Original Press Release:

cPCI Pentium M SBC Capitalizes on PCI Express

Lago Vista, TX, April 4,2006 - The new F14 CompactPCI (cPCI) single board computer (SBC) from MEN Micro (www.menmicro.com) features a two-GHz Intel® Pentium M processor and is able to stand up to harsh environmental conditions in applications such as industrial automation, medical systems and transportation applications including trains, buses, airliners, ships and commercial vehicles.

"For industrial embedded applications oftentimes two factors take on great importance: power consumption and ruggedness," said Ernest Godsey, president of MEN Micro, Inc. "With the F14, we've minimized power consumption and maximized ruggedness, while supporting four PCI Express lanes. The PCI Express lanes are critical for systems that rely on high-speed communications. The PCI Express lanes can be utilized by the F14's two Gigabit Ethernet ports or two SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interfaces, or they can be used to deliver highspeed graphics."

The F14 is a single-slot 32-bit/33-MHz cPCI system master or standalone SBC in a single-wide 3U CompactPCI form factor. The F14 can be configured with a Pentium M processor with clock frequencies up to two GHz or a low-power Celeron M processor. The SBC is capable of operating over the entire extended temperature range of-40 to 85 degrees C. All components are soldered onto the underlying circuit board for superb shock and vibration resistance. In addition, the F14 can be delivered with an optional conformal coating that protects it from humid and corrosive chemicals in the environment.

The F14's four lanes of PCI Express are provided by Intel's 915GM chip set. The input/output (I/O) interfaces at the front panel on the Fl4 include a VGA connector for graphics, the two Gigabit Ethernet channels and two USB 2.0 ports. Additional I/O can be configured using expansion cards or the F14 can be mounted on a carrier card for 6U double Eurocard systems, for example.

I/O from the F14 can be expanded to include common UARTs, additional USB ports, audio I/O, or two DVI connections which can be used to display either the same or different images on several screens. The F14 also supports rear-panel I/O.

On-board memory resources include up to two GB of fast double data rate (DDR2) DRAM. A CompactFlash slot is available for additional memory or a 1.8-in. hard disk drive can be installed onboard. The F14 also features several watchdog monitors for processor and board temperatures. Comprehensive board support packages are available for Windows, Linux, QNX and Vx Works.
