New PowerPC cPCI SBC Provides a Rugged Engine for Embedded Communications/Networking Systems

Dallas, September 26,2005 - Designers of embedded communications or networking equipment will find the connectivity and processing capabilities they need in a new CompactPCI PowerPC single board computer (SBC) from MEN Micro, (www.menmicro.com).

Depending on the needs of the application, the F13 can be configured with either of two next-generation 833 MHz PowerQUICC III processors from Freescale Semiconductor, the MPC8540 or the MPC8560. In addition, the F13 is equipped with an Altera Cyclone FPGA (field programmable gate array), a device which can be used to implement multiple parameterized blocks of intellectual property (IP), reducing design and test time for application-specific input-output (I/O) or other functionality.

"The F13 is particularly well suited as a control element for network routers and switches, storage subsystems, network appliances, and print and imaging devices," said Ernest Godsey, president of MEN Micro. "Its low power consumption and rugged operational characteristics makes the F13 a great solution for embedded communications systems like remote network servers or access points, base stations and the like."

A version of the F13 will operate over the extended industrial temperature range of -40 to 85 degrees C. And the PowerQUICC HI processors typically consume as little as 7.4 Watts of power.

The F13 features several communications-oriented interfaces on the front panel, including two Gigabit Ethernet ports, one Fast Ethernet interface and a serial UART. Moreover, additional telecommunications interfaces such as ATM, E3/T3 and HDLC, can be supported through the on-board FPGA. This I/O is routed to the rear when it is implemented. Graphics and other I/O functionality can also be configured in the Cyclone FPGA. Logic cores are available for downloading from MEN's function library as well as other sources.

On-board memory storage capacity is significant. The F13 supports an SO-DIMM slot for as much as two gigabytes (GB) of 133 MHz double data rate (DDR) RAM and up to one GB of NAND flash memory. A real-time clock and several watchdog monitors are also included on the F13.

Comprehensive board support packages based on MEN's BIOS for PowerPC processors, MENMON, are available for Linux, VxWorks and QNX.
