Original Press Release:

EPIC Format Computer Provides OEM Expansion Support

Eugene, OR - VersaLogic Corp. today announced a new EPIC format single board computer, with below-the-board expansion connectors. The new Gecko model includes pass-through connectors for both the PC/104 and PC/104-Plus signals. The pass-through connectors support I/O intensive designs by allowing the board to accommodate I/O expansion both above and below, the PCB. This is especially useful for OEMs with proprietary I/O baseboards.

This essentially creates two expansion sites for engineers to use when designing their systems", states Tom Barnum, VersaLogic's VP of Sales. The pass-through connectors allow expansion above or below the main SBC. However, I/O expansion below the main board is not limited to PC/104 size. It can be as large, or larger, than the SBC itself.

For OEM applications, large or complex I/O expansion boards can be developed around the EPIC platform, without obsolescence or upgrade concerns. The EPIC platform compatibility means that the main CPU/SBC board can be changed in the future, to add performance or features as needed. No modifications to the users I/O board are required.

The Gecko board features an AMD GX-500 low power processor, SODIMM socket supporting up to 512 MB DDR RAM, Analog and LVDS flat panel video interface, 10/100 Ethernet, 4 USB ports, 4 COM ports, IDE interface, CompactFlash socket, eight 12-bit analog inputs, and 16 lines of digital I/O. The board also includes built-in ESD protection, fanless operation, and a watchdog timer for hardware-level safety control. It is compatible with most x86 operating systems, including Win95/98/NT/CE/XP, QNX, VxWorks, and Linux, and includes an OEM-enhanced field reprogrammable BIOS with user configurable CMOS defaults.

The Gecko with feed-through connectors is currently available from stock as part number EPIC-2c. Pricing is $694 in OEM quantities. For additional information contact VersaLogic Corp. at (541) 485-8575 or info@versalogic.com, or visit their on-line catalog at www.VersaLogic.com.
