Original Press Release:

New EBX Pentium® III SBC for Industrial Applications

-40° to +60°C Operational Range on a PC-Compatible EBX sized board

January 13, 2003, Arlington, Texas -- WinSystems announces their EBC-BX, an Intel 700 MHz low-power, Pentium III-based single board computer (SBC) offering an operational temperature range of -40° to +60°Celsius. The EBC-BX combines 6 important features needed for computation-intensive industrial applications onto a 5.75" x 8.0" (146mm x 203mm) EBX-compliant platform. They are: (1) Intel Pentium III CPU with core logic functions, (2) Video controller with CRT and flat panel support, (3) 10/100 Mbps Ethernet controller, (4) Four serial channels, (5) 48-bidirectional digital I/O lines, and (6) Solid State Disk support. Plus, it also supports USB, PC/104 and PC/104-Plus expansion for additional peripheral devices. Since the EBC-BX's architecture is PC/AT compatible, it supports Windows CE.NET/XP, Linux, QNX, VxWorks, and a vast software tool set including web servers, device drivers, and libraries, which facilitates speedy program development and checkout.

PRODUCT FEATURES

A 700 MHz Intel Pentium III is used since it is designed for low-power and space-constrained applications. It also includes 256KB of on-die L2 cache operating at the CPU's core frequency. The Intel 440BX system controller chipset provides the core logic that makes the board PC/AT compatible. The 440BX includes the DRAM controller, internal PCI bus and external PC/104 Bus interface logic, real-time clock, plus integrated peripherals including DMA, timers, interrupt, and keyboard controllers. A 3.5"/5.25" floppy disk controller and PCI EIDE hard disk interface are also included. Both CPU and system controller are supplied from Intel's Embedded Architecture Division for long-term availability.

Up to 256Mbytes of system SDRAM with standard 168-pin SIMM devices are supported. Also a 32-pin memory socket allows an EPROM or M-Systems' DiskOnChip (DOC) Flash memory to serve as a bootable SSD Drive.

An onboard, high-performance PCI video controller will drive both CRT and flat panels simultaneously. It supports color STN, TFT, and dual scan color STN panels with 8- to 36-bit interface lines and resolutions up to 1280 x 1024. An Intel 82559 PCI Ethernet controller provides a high-speed 10/100Mbps link plus net boot support from a remote network server.

The EBC-BX has four independent, asynchronous serial RS-232 COM channels that operate from 50 to 115.2K bits per second. COM1 and COM2 will also support the RS-422/485 or J1708 electrical interface. A standard LPT line printer port supports Extended Capabilities Port (ECP) and Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) functions. The LPT port is designed to provide enhanced ESD and Latch-up protection of up to 4KV/300mA. A 48-line digital I/O controller is on board that is programmable for each line providing input, output or output with readback.

The EBC-BX requires only +5 volts and typically draws 3.4 Amps with 128Mbytes of SDRAM. This is about half the current of a similar Socket 370 processor design.
